It’s currently not supported, but last I heard on the Avid forums it’s close to certification. There are some folks running it, and they haven’t reported problems. To be perfectly safe, don’t install it, but if you choose to–let us know if something bad happens, and let us know if it doesn’t too.

Import your logo at 1:1. DV will destroy graphics.
Make sure your timeline is set to show Full Quality (Green/Green toggle on the timeline).
Hit play and see if the jaggies disappear, and look at it on a client monitor (not your computer monitor). When you stop play in Avid it’s only showing you 1 field, so graphics often look bad.
What are your import settings? Did you choose Noninterlaced? Try that and Maintain Non-Square.

September 2, 2008 at 1:25 pm in reply to: How to copy paste from one track to another ?Copy/Paste always pastes on the same track you copied from.
Instead of hitting Ctrl+C to copy, hit Alt+C to copy your selected portion of your timeline to your source monitor, move your playhead to where you want to paste it, mark your In point, repatch your tracks, and cut/splice it in.
You can also just hit C to copy your selected region to your clipboard monitor, but then you have to go to Tools–>Clipboard monitor to have access to it. Alt+C loads it into your source monitor, which I find more convenient.

What version of Avid are you running? This seems to break in about every other version, but in 3.0 it’s fixed (finally!).
If you’re on 3.0 but you’re using settings from a previous version, you may need to make a brand new user to get it to stick, but in 3.0 all of my setting are sticking.

You say you’re using a regular Mojo–try hitting the DNA button on your Timeline so it switches to Firewire (1394, I believe). Then see if your responsiveness improves. You’ll lose ouput through your Mojo, but you might have improved accuracy in the edit system.
I’m also surprised that you’re seeing a lag–with previous versions it was bad (especially when compared to Meridiens), but with MC 3.0 I haven’t had the lag issue at all. If I had to guess, I would point to your Mojo.
And you’re running the right drivers (if you right click the desktop, go to the nVidia Control Panel, then choose the Help menu, System Information, you’ll see Forceware Driver 167.47 listed, which is right).

In video, DPI means absolutely nothing.
You need to use the Pan and Zoom effect in Avid, or look into using After Effects, Boris Red, or StageTools (an Avid Plugin) for this.
Avid’s Pan and Zoom will do what you want, but won’t rotate. You can do these things easily in Boris or AE if you’re familiar with them, and it will probably take about 3 minutes to learn StageTools if you decide to go that route (a great plugin, but not incredibly cheap).
If you use Avid’s Pan and Zoom, you’ll be limited to 3000 x 3000 pixels if I remember right. So can your photo in to be 3000 x 3000 pixels (or bigger, then crop the bit you need). Leave it this size, and save it as a targa.
Import that picture into Avid and it will resize it. Drop it into your timeline where you want to do the move, then apply the Pan and Zoom effect. Open the effect editor and click the gray button by Pan and Zoom. It will open a box where you navigate to the 3000 x 3000 picture on your hard drive. Keyframe your movement, set it to highest quality, and render (read the help files for more on how the effect works).
Voila! Zoom into pictures without quality loss.

August 28, 2008 at 9:09 pm in reply to: Adding nested motion effects to multiple clipsAll Timewarp effects have to go on the bottom of the nest, directly onto the clip.
Use say you used Magic Bullet to color correct–did you tweak it for every effect, or did you apply and tweak it for one then copy it to all the others?
If you tweaked it for one and applied it to all the others, then simply add that effect to a layer directly above your video and remove the MB effect from the clips–it will effect all the video below it, as though it was on each individual clip. Then you can select all the clips (now devoid of all effects) and mass apply the FluidFilm effect.
However, if you tweaked MB for each clip, then stepping in and applying the FluidFilm effect is about all you can do (unless you want to move each MB effect to a track above the clips and basically add edit marks where cuts take place to keep the effects above their respective clip).
Don’t forget, if you go into Segment or Effect mode and double click a clip with an effect on it it will expand on the timeline, so you could go into Effect mode, double click the first clip, drag the FluidFilm effect to the expanded layer, double click the next clip, drag the FluidFilm effect, etc… Might be faster than stepping in and out.

Pan and Scan under the Reformat group of your effects palette.
Set your source to 16:9 anamorphic, and your target to 4:3. Render if necessary.

I’d say go with the Macs, particularly if the rest of their systems are Macs. There’s pretty much parity between Avid running on a Mac or PC these days (at least as standalone systems), so they may as well stick with the system they have the most of.
Plus, should they choose Mac, they can throw in a spare hard drive and dual boot for a FCP system or Avid system (keep it a dual boot or on seperate drives so you can run the different versions of quicktime that FCP uses versus Avid, and OS versions).
If you were using Adrenaline boxes I’d say look at the PCs since there’s a firewire problem with using Macs running Leopard in conjunction with Adrenaline or regular Mojo boxes. But, since you’ll be using the Nitris DX, you won’t have the firewire issues to deal with.
My recommendation, though, should be taken with a grain of salt, as I have no familiarity with systems attached to a Unity. PCs may well do better in that regard. Hopefully someone with Unity experience can chime in. I’ve not heard any stories of Macs on Unity causing problems, but I also have no first hand knowlege to guarantee it.

What version of Quicktime and what version of drivers for your nVidia card are you using?
For Media Composer 3.0 you should be on Quicktime 7.4.5.
You should be using nVidia driver 169.47.
Here’s the matrix I got that from:
