Activity Forums Avid Media Composer PC Vs MAC

    Greetings Herd!

One of my clients is about to upgrade their Adrenalines to the latest Media Composer Nitris DX and I want to get the real deal about the pros and cons of using it with Macs vs PCs. I am recommending Macs because they are a Mac facility all around (except for the Adrenalines) and also have some Final Cut Pro systems. They will also be on a Unity for storage.

The vibe I get from re-sellers is that ‘Oh PC’s just work better with it’ but the official PR from Avid is that they support both.

I am definitely a fan of Mac’s over PC’s but of course don’t want to advise them to do something that will cause support headaches..

Can anyone chime on on their experience with this issue?

    Thanks much!

I’d say go with the Macs, particularly if the rest of their systems are Macs. There’s pretty much parity between Avid running on a Mac or PC these days (at least as standalone systems), so they may as well stick with the system they have the most of.

Plus, should they choose Mac, they can throw in a spare hard drive and dual boot for a FCP system or Avid system (keep it a dual boot or on seperate drives so you can run the different versions of quicktime that FCP uses versus Avid, and OS versions).

If you were using Adrenaline boxes I’d say look at the PCs since there’s a firewire problem with using Macs running Leopard in conjunction with Adrenaline or regular Mojo boxes. But, since you’ll be using the Nitris DX, you won’t have the firewire issues to deal with.

My recommendation, though, should be taken with a grain of salt, as I have no familiarity with systems attached to a Unity. PCs may well do better in that regard. Hopefully someone with Unity experience can chime in. I’ve not heard any stories of Macs on Unity causing problems, but I also have no first hand knowlege to guarantee it.

    Michael.

You might want to ask around on the Avid Forums in the Unity section.
The other thing to consider might be the different support contracts offered by HP and Apple. The latter seems to be less impressive.
