Are you sure it is the computer and not the drives? Are your drives close to full?

I have run HD for three years on my G5 dual 2.5gig without problems from uncompressed 10 bit, HDV, DVCProHD and ProRes.

What is the final frame rate? I hope it is 25 for your sake.

When he shot the singer at 50 fps was he miming to the song played at double speed or normal speed? Without knowing these things, I can’t guess what you are dealing with.

Also tell the director that without a pre production meeting with this sort of thing planned, he is an idiot.

[Chris Sanderson] “Being that the downmix is only for monitoring purposes, this setup would work fine for laying off 5.1 to D5 correct?”

No. Changing levels affects the SDI output. Map for six or 8 channels output, make all channels stereo and patch 1&2 to 1&2 output, 3&4 to 3&4 output and 5&6 to 5&6 output. Set all channels to 0 and pan hard left right.

Now you are set to output the channels at unity and discreet. The FCP default is not correct for output to tape.

[Dennis Radeke] “To the best of my knowledge, CEDAR products do not offer the spectral frequency views that Soundbooth does.”

CEDAR moved on from the spectral sampling method years ago. Their denoise and debuzz algorithms are the best I have heard and regardless of price or platform, it is far from correct to say that Soundbooth is the best. Nice that low cost systems have their fans but please make your superlatives relative to actual experience of alternative systems.

This is all too common a problem because people insist on capturing HDV and ignoring timecode breaks. I suspect the problem was in the initial capture and in recapturing you are discovering this problem. You will have to increase your handle size, capture the shot and then manually roll the shot back into the correct sync.

I online HDV and often recapture and this is my standard fixup.

[Dennis Radeke] “reduce noise (like hum, hiss, HVAC, etc) better than any other audio products”

    Really? Better than CEDAR?

There are many “standards” for track config in 5.1 so it is important to know what is required by distributors or broadcasters. Whatever you choose, please label the tracks on the output tape clearly.

Anything that changes levels will make your sound post people very annoyed. If you are confused about dual mono, I would recommend keeping everything as stereo channels and make sure your levels are unity and everything is panned hard left/right.

Are you using the FCP built in crawl or the Boris title tools that come with FCP? I never use the FCP one as it is very ordinary. The Boris title crawl is much better. Deinterlace a crawl will make it look worse.

Also as Chris says, what codec is your final? If you are using DV then all text will look shabby.

  • The best mpeg2 encoding I have seen was with a Tandberg hardware encoder. I was doing some high quality HD mpegs for a VMD test disk and I fed the HD SDI from FCP into it and hit play.

The mpeg2 transport streams were amazing quality and real time. There is no way I would software encode if I could afford a unit like the Tandberg (which was provided by the client).

  • I find the Nattress Chroma smoothing filters help to tame blooming reds. Also if you are using a DV sequence it is makes the reds worse.
