Bright reds bleeding / artifacting badly on export – any tips?
Posted by Daniel Haythorn on March 10, 2009 at 12:21 amHi everyone,
I am having to incorporate a very bright red logo into an edit I’m currently trying to finish. I can’t seem to export the film (as a viewing copy, to show a client) without the logo looking frankly pretty horrible. It’s got to be finished on DVD, so I would like the logo to look as good as possible for that format too, but in the meantime I just want to be able to show them something where their logo doesn’t look awful!!
I’m aware that reds cause problems, but I was wondering if anyone had any good tips for minimizing and / or eliminating those problems…
Thankyou!

March 10, 2009 at 12:25 amI find the Nattress Chroma smoothing filters help to tame blooming reds. Also if you are using a DV sequence it is makes the reds worse.

March 10, 2009 at 12:33 amThanks for your prompt replies, and apologies, I should have provided more detail…
It’s HDV material, and I’m editing it in an HDV sequence. Is that prone to make this red problem a little worse?

March 10, 2009 at 12:40 amDVD is 4:2:0 colorspace. In essence any red pixel gets “spread” across 4 pixels horizontally (not exactly the technical reason, but this is pretty much what you see). Red graphics look BAD. Watch the credits for “Dawn of the Dead” and you see they had the same problem.

March 10, 2009 at 12:43 amI’ve heard that in the long run it’s better to just avoid bright red in certain formats… but alas it’s their logo! Wish I could ditch it but I suspect my client might be a little upset 🙂

March 10, 2009 at 12:46 amI had a similar problem with a film trailer I did in 1080 uncompressed. I ended up compositing the titles in After Effects and applying a very delicate soft edge to the red graphics – it helped keep them from “stair-stepping” on the edges so drastically.
I think FCP had a soft edge filter of some sort? Or even just apply a .5 gaussian blur to the graphics and see if it helps.
Also if their logo is REALLY bright red, use a color corrector to bring it back a little. Sometimes what looks good CMYK on printed paper needs to be toned down for TV.

March 10, 2009 at 12:54 amI’ll try that with the filters / blurs… I’ve already taken a bit of colour from out of it, but may well try taking a bit more… Cheers!

March 10, 2009 at 1:03 amHere’s a couple of things that will help.
1. Apply the Broadcast Safe filter.
2. Change the Compressor in Sequence>>Setting to ProRes and re-render the sequence.

March 10, 2009 at 2:15 amOpen up the video scopes under the “Tools” menu. I’ll bet that the vectorscope has a nice big spike in the reds. If that spike goes too close to the edge of the scope, you will have these type of problems.
You need to pull that spike away from the edge. Try desaturating the logo 5-10% and see if that helps.
