I work with this director, whom in a moment of blazing inspiration came up with a creative way to poke my brain.

this is what i’m facing, and on a deadline.

he shot a singer’s CU in 50 FPS (2K on RED) and handed me the footage to prep for second day of shooting where he will project the sync on a large screen, behind a busy set, which he will shoot LS, 5 FPS.

he wants the final footage to have the screen in sync with the actual song.

i figured i have to slow the sync to 40%

my question is, do you think it will sync correctly? and which would be the bast way to render the slow sync, considering it will be re-shot in 5FPS later,

frame blending on? off? optical flow?

would love to be able to test, but was told about this last night and delivering it today.

    thanks

    🙂

What is the final frame rate? I hope it is 25 for your sake.

When he shot the singer at 50 fps was he miming to the song played at double speed or normal speed? Without knowing these things, I can’t guess what you are dealing with.

Also tell the director that without a pre production meeting with this sort of thing planned, he is an idiot.

i try not to tell my clients things of this sort… at least not before they pay 🙂

he shot 50 fps, singer singing normally, not a faster version.

final output of course is 25 fps

    thanks

[Hector berrebi] ” and which would be the bast way to render the slow sync, “
If you go to slow 50%, just conform the clip to p25. Perfect slow down. No rendering.
If you want to slow further, Optic Flow.

Firstly the 50 fps will not sync in the final 25 frame timeline. It will play like a slow mo and will need to be sped up 50% to sync. This will make it look like normal motion, defeating the purpose of overcranking.

To make it seem like sync when shooting at 5 fps, it will need to run 80% slower. This is because the lip sync playback was not double speed to match the 50 fps frame rate. Otherwise your estimate of 40% would be correct.

In other words, the playback rate needs to be proportional to the 5 fps. As this is 20% of your base frame rate, everything sync has to be slowed by that amount including any further playback to lip sync to.

The director made a mistake shooting the singer at 50fps without speeding up the playback x 2 to lip sync. I appreciate you can’t tell him of his basic mistakes. The client is always right – especially when they are wrong.

i think you got this slightly off…

if i wanted an effect of everything slow but her mouth (or the opposite) i would need to record her singing fast or slow matching the frame rate. we play with these options once in a while..

however, in this case, the slow footage is projected, re-shot at 5 fps there for sped up, back (hopefully) to sync.

if i take the 50 FPS footage and turn it to 200% it syncs

so if i export it as 40% turning it to 20% of original, when its shot at 5 fps it will go back to 100%

Rafael. eventually its what i wanted to go with, but too tight of a deadline and no time for renders… will go with blended at best render settings

    thanks

Yes, I have been thinking about this instead of going to bed and getting up for an early morning flight so I am doing too many things at once.

    Yes the 40% is correct.
