    Good Evening All,

I know it’s a common problem with FCP, but every time I make a scrolling or crawling caption it flickers like mad and is unusable. And so it is with a one minute credit crawl I created a couple of days ago.

I’ve tried adjusting the speed up and down, using de-interlace and flicker filters, changing the font and the size, but it makes no difference , other than actually making it worse sometimes.

So I export it to Motion and go through all the same tricks again – Optical Flow etc etc – still no difference.

If anyone has had a Eureka moment recently and discovered a way out of this I would love to hear from you. If not, well, at least I’ve posted another reminder for Apple to sort this out – this is such an annoying problem, especially as this is such a simple operation and works first time with every other editing programme I’ve ever used.

    Thanks for reading,

    All the best,

    Steve.

Are you viewing the result on a proper NTSC monitor? Are you rendering in a hi-rez codec? Sounds like basic DV sequence problems.

    Have a wonderful day.

Are you using the FCP built in crawl or the Boris title tools that come with FCP? I never use the FCP one as it is very ordinary. The Boris title crawl is much better. Deinterlace a crawl will make it look worse.

Also as Chris says, what codec is your final? If you are using DV then all text will look shabby.

Hi, this is my first post in the COW…

Well you can have this kind of flickering text no matter what you use, sometimes even using livetype/animation codec this happen, I use the re-interlace plugin from re:visionFX, It’s part of the Fields Kit pakage and I’ve found works great where no other solution could do anything, trouble is… that are not cheap plugs those from re:visionFX.

    Thanks Fellas,

On this occassion I am indeed using DV – call me fussy if you like but I’d quite like things like titles to work properly with DV as well as higher quality codecs! It does with Adobe Premiere.

I haven’t used the built in Boris title generator, so I’ll give it a go, thanks. I’m actually trying to create a crawl that contains two rows of text – one with the job titles in lower case and one underneath with the crew names in upper case.

Of course, FCP only lets me use a single line of text, and trying to make both layers crawl in sync (so the job titles stay in position above the crew names) is turning out to be very difficult to create.

Can I create two lines of crawling text in Boris?

Thanks again for your advice, it’s much appreciated.

    Steve.

    Steve,
You can work in DV, but just before you output, go into sequence settings and change the compressor to 8 bit uncompressed or ProRes. You’ll have to render again but your graphics will improve.

    Have a wonderful day.

Also go into your Sequence Settings and make Render Motion “Best” and Video Processing “Best”

Use san serif fonts, ’cause serif fonts don’t animate well.
