Perhaps there was one file that had corruption or was a wrong format like mp3 or not 48khz. FCP doesn’t like non PCM 48khz files.
Like Walter, I have made or received many hundreds of FCP OMFs over the years and since Vers3 they have been bullet proof

You could also try the smoothcam plugin on the background shot. If it is a just a bit wobbly it might smooth it enough.
Make sure you make a short QT file of the background or smoothcam will try to analyse a huge shot depending on how you captured.

Play them in QT and check the codec and frame rate details. That will at least tell you what the frame rate is.
After that it might be better to try Compressor to do a frame and codec conversion to something FCP can edit.

A better result will come from doing the fold down manually in FCP or some other audio tool that lets you automate levels and also provides dynamics control if the stereo fold is to comply with broadcast level specs. That way you can get the right balance of elements and final stereo level.

I can see two problems with your setup. Firstly you should monitor both picture & sound via the Kona. There is a 4 frame offset in playback which means the sound coming straight from the mac will not be in sync with the picture via the Kona.
Secondly, if I understand your description you are using your system drive (single internal 7200) to playback ProRes. If it is your system drive, then this is a big no no. If it is a separate drive, have you run the speed test to see if the drive is up to spec?

I assume the HD tape is HDV format. When FCP 4.5 was released HDV didn’t exist so it is not unexpected that such old software doesn’t recognise the camera.
However, most HDV devices will do a down convert to DV codec. If you set the playback device to do that correctly, FCP should recognise that device as DV firewire. Forget iMovie as it convert HDV to AIC which isn’t a useful codec to integrate with you other footage.

I see no point in teaching students with the attitude that they will just use defaults. If they are not going to learn the importance of providing the correct file formats for a post production workflow that is correct and glitch free, then stop taking their money and send them home.
Otherwise, when they graduate, these students will continue to make basic errors and us professionals on the receiving end of ill trained, lazy operators will curse the attitude that there are some things you just can’t teach.

Thanks for the info Brecht. It might be the font. If it has really thin lines they might be the cause of the jitter. Try the bold version perhaps.
The other important thing is to check in the motion tab that the positioning is not using numbers with fractions. Make sure they are whole numbers to avoid sub pixel interpreting.
Crawl speed is always an issue, but I have been impressed with the Boris title tools.

Audio is not video format specific. There is no such thing as NTSC 48Khz.
So the answer to your question is no
