I have a Mac Pro FCS2 with an AJA Kona LHe card. When I play back a 1080i Prores file in Final Cut the audio and video are in sync and everything’s fine. When I look at it on my external monitor running through HD SDI out, the audio is out of sync and when I hit pause. I can see that the picture is jumping by several frames. I thought it might be the hard drive but using the internal tools, my bar is staying in the green. Has anybody else experienced this? Thanks.

No there is no render bar at all. It’s in it’s native format and easy setup is set for Prores 1080i 29.97 same as my footage.

Your rende rbar is green? Sounds like you have a mismatch of settings.

Choose the proper easy setup by hitting control-q and then choose AJA Kona LHe 1080i 29.97 ProRes (or HQ if you are using that) and hit okay.

Then make a new sequence. Drag a piece of footage into that sequence.

    Is it running ok now?

Has this setup (your computer) ever worked?

What kind of RAID system are you using?

where is your audio playing from? Is it coming out of the LHe and into a mixer?

Alright let me answer all your questions together here.

Has this setup (your computer) ever worked?
Yes, we are now transitioning to using prores as our main codec but I have successfully edited both Standard Def Prores and HDV footage with no problems.

What kind of RAID system are you using?
My system is a single internal 7200 RPM HD. I just noticed today that we are having the same issue on our studio machine as well though and that is two drives in a RAID 0 together. As I said I checked the internal tools and the drives are keeping up just fine.

where is your audio playing from? Is it coming out of the LHe and into a mixer?
No I am using a pair of monitors running out of the line output of the mac pro. I have not had a chance to test if using the AJA out would help at all, however even if it did, that’s only part of the issue. As I said, the footage is delayed from what’s on my canvas or viewer and when I hit pause, the footage on my external monitor jumps to catch up.
Thanks for all your help please me know if you have any other ideas.

Ok, a little more information. Comparing the CPU utilization of playing back an HDV clip, it’s taking up about 80% CPU in the activity monitor. When I playback a prores clip It’s more around 140%. Does anybody know if this is correct. I was under the assumption that HDV took more CPU and that was one of the main reasons to use Prores over it. If someone could test this out and see if this correct or if this could be the source of my problems I’d appreciate it. Thanks.

[Brian Leighty] “One other thing I noted between the two, my AJA card when playing back the HDV sequence goes to DVCPROHD50”

You know David Roth Weiss noticed that too. DVCProHD50 is not a format so it must be a reporting error on the AJA side.

    ProRes should be 10bit playout.

It takes more CPU to render HDV due to it’s Long Gop stricture. ProRes takes a lot of horsepower to decompress on the fly when playing back. Also, ProRes is highly optimized for the rt engine due to it’s half and quarter size on the fly. It might take more to play it back, but when going through editing, it’s a much easier codec to work with.

Gotcha so then that is correct that it should take more CPU to playback. One other thing I noted between the two, my AJA card when playing back the HDV sequence goes to DVCPROHD50 but on the Prores sequence it switches YUV-8b or 10b depending on which I have selected. Any other thoughts?
