It can all be done within the node structure. A cheats way is to duplicate the clip to a layer above and apply an alpha output from the mask you put on the objects in front of the mirror. This might help you to visualise the process then apply that to layering within the nodes rather than actual layers on the timeline, whatever works for you.

You need to apply a mask to the objects that pass in front of the mirror mask and track them so that the mirror mask is behind the foreground action. It might be easier to find an online tutorial that explains how to set that up.

You want to read up about the way to set and use local versions not remote versions. It’s possible to copy the remote version to a local version which means you can adjust just that clip without changing others. There can be a case put for remote versions but I only work with local versions which makes each clip unique. Of course you can easily copy a grade from one clip to many others then individually tweak.

It’s well graded and shot nicely. The cameras likely had some sort of log or similar workflow requirements that could be handled a number of ways including using a LUT. However there is no need to use a LUT if you know how to color space transform in Resolve. I would likely grade this without using a LUT of any description. In fact I often don’t see a need for a LUT in grading. It’s a tool in grading for sure but in doco grades I mostly don’t reach for a LUT. Knowing how and when to use a LUT is something that comes with experience. However it is never mandatory and in fact could be seen as lazy practice

  • What software do you run? Personally I find best performance to price is PC unless you have to run non cross platform software. Only then you need to look exclusively within the Apple hardware ecosystem.

  • Ah interesting new feature. I can see why as I mostly had to turn off the previous default to import stills. I can see why they have done that. I used to ask that editors didn’t give a number to jpegs so they didn’t look like image sequences. I hadn’t picked that up as a change in the latest software so thanks for that.

Boris CC plugins can be slow. It depends on if you are using the latest plugins where they have improved their renders by using the GPU. The earlier versions of the plugins were very slow.

The main factor in rendering settings are the GPU settings in preferences. Your system settings render options are codecs which makes little difference to render speed and optimisation.

BM have been advertising the 3x and recently the 5x performance increase of using Resolve on the M1 range. That’s their claim and a few YouTube comparisons that I have seen tend to suggest the M1 chips are impressive performance increases from the Intel chip range.

Bear in mind the speed test is drive speed.

I wasn’t aware that Blackmagic have included Win 11 in their recommended software & hardware. I suggest you contact them directly as they may be better placed to help and would also value the feedback if they are working on Win 11 compatibility. Personally I am sticking to Win 10 as those sorts of issues would drive me crazy.

  • Your problem seems to be atypical in my experience. The best way to sort this is to contact BM support directly and they will tell you how to send through a log file and system specs. Given the huge variability with computer hardware and OS issues these days this sounds like a fairly specific issue.
