The link function enables you to link together a number of clips together as one clip
Say you want another piece of sound with a different piece of video. Link them together and away you go. Also you can link say dat audio syncing it with the video.
It used to work but I can’t seem to get it to work now

Very ingenious Sean. Alot of us realized how good the jpeg codec was quite awhile ago but were frustrated by the abject lack of concern from apple heads. It is a great codec to store finished masters at. Thanks for your determination to move us forward on a codec that has great respect but unfortunately gets ignored by the code writers at apple.
On an unrelated topic did you perhaps notice that the link function in fcp 5.02 doesn’t seem to work
It did in 4.5. Any work arounds for that Sean?

July 22, 2005 at 8:52 pm in reply to: THE tough decision…

Having a family myself I can see the attraction to taking the safe route. In fact I see no reason why you shouldn’t take the full time gig and benefits etc. Consider that once you have the money you need that affords you a great deal of freedom to do the kinds of projects you may want to do. That’s a real plus.
Still others would argue that you only live once and you may kick yourself years from now not going for it and heading to Manhattan to give it a shot. Personally, I recommend to young editors or want to be editors to not waste their time and go stratight to LA or NYC. I can see from the postings that NY has more stuff going on than anywhere else save for LA. I don’t think you’ll have much issue with competition because there is just alot of work. I guess the question is will the pay in NY be as good or is there so much competition that you end up working for very little. I can’t answer that one.
Perhaps you can got to NY for a month or so and give it a shot , see what its like and if you like it and then decide. Depends on your finances and your spouse and the like.
Really a tough choice but a good gig is a good gig and NY will always be there.

July 22, 2005 at 5:05 pm in reply to: scopes in fcp vs color finesse

I think Walter was referring to an HD scope but nonetheless I have also found that in SD the fcp scopes to be quite accurate, certainly within a couple of units. Having worked on some broadcaster systems who have tek scopes I found there to be no difference either in chroma or luma. As for the color finesse scope I have also found those to be quite accurate and really more user friendly than most outboard new generation scopes. I think the color finesse plug in for both fcp and ae are outstanding values. I can’t recall if color finesse has primary and secondary color correctors but bit depth is great and flexibility is amazing. It has far better quality if you are working in a 32 bit space in AE though versus the FCP world. So if you have a single shot or a short number of shots then do them in AE
(I digress) The scopes in both are quite accurate but the fcp one lack the ability of constant update however I think the guys at ripple training had a tip to watch it in full update mode

I see you are an early riser Walter. I have actually never seen this so I am guessing it may just be a trash prefs thing. I’ll give a shot. Any idea about whether the compressor slowness will affect the slowness of dvd studio pro 4?

Otherwise I assume most are relatively happy with Tiger. I am in a lull and can make the move but as you can imagine don’t need the headaches especially considering the fcp upgrade doesn’t really deliver any new meaningful upgrades.

Thanks for the input guys. Just as I surmised I am not the only one reluctant to move ahead given that the system is working great. I’ll hold off or better yet convince a competitor to upgrade (not)

June 1, 2005 at 4:43 pm in reply to: Blackmagic, Aurora or AJA?

I have 3 BlackMagic Products and have had great experience with the products and the folks at BM
Their drivers are rock solid and the cards are very reliable. I would recommend you read some postings on both the AJA website here on the COW as well as the BM Forum. Some issues have been raised in real life situations that may help you make up your mind. Grant at BM is very respected in the card and HD world, very approachable and knowledgeable. Their cards are availabe here from their rep in Vegas. Only real diff is that some cards are a 1 year warranty and others are 3 year warranties. Check this out

May 4, 2005 at 4:43 pm in reply to: MPEG 1 with AVi

Thanks for your info. He told me that if I supply an mpeg1 in a qt format the qt player shows up in the powerpoint so the solution is avi. I think in cleaner that if I encode mpeg1 it wraps it in a qt player format which , as he indicated, is not desireable in powerpoint.
Sound right? I’ll investigate the other programs , hopefully they are not expensive
