    Hi

I pop into the forum from time to time to see the general feeling about the latest update to our beloved FCP and am getting some mixed reactions. Some, like Marco Solorio, say that there seems to be a stable combination of OS, QT and FCP that works and suggest we stick with that. As I am mid monster project I feel his advice is very appropriate. A few have indicated some problems and some no problems at all. The suggested upgrade path as noted in LAFCPUG is a huge undertaking and one I am leery of taking at this point seeing as everything works well in my two suites.
Is there a general consensus that the worst of the storm has passed or do many of you feel that if you don’t need to upgrade just stay where you are?

Why rock the boat! If you don’t need the any of the new features why would consider risking a meltdown. OS install failure can happen with ANY update and are never lite fair. I make money with my machine as do most here. Pick a strategic time for the upgrade and know what you gain before taking the risks involved. my 2 cents-

    Hope this helps-

I agree with Matthew, I made the upgrade on my extra partition. So I can learn and use FCP 5 suite but I have the older trusted set to jump to if needed. I would not suggesting to boldly go into the upgrade, a gental tip toe is recommended.

Never upgrade or update mid-project unless you’re having a real issue that requires you to make some sort of update.

I’ve installed Tiger / FCP 5 Studio onto our second edit system, though I partitioned the internal HD to run Panther / FCP 4.5 as well. FCP 5 seems to be working ok, though no really hard testing yet and I haven’t tried playing around with graphics, which seems to be a real issue right now on FCP 5. I’m cutting my own independent film and will use FCP 5 for that as a test project.

So if you have an extra system or want to install Tiger / FCP 5 onto another internal drive, then go ahead so you can experiment with it. As for putting it right into production on a money making machine, even I’m not doing that yet. We’re doing a broadcast HD series right now and my system is so rock solid on OS 10.3.8 with FCP 4.5 that there is simply no reason to make the move just because FCP 5 is here in the shop.

As soon as we get the series cut and Apple addresses the graphics issue, then I’ll look to put a “real project” on FCP 5.

Thanks for the input guys. Just as I surmised I am not the only one reluctant to move ahead given that the system is working great. I’ll hold off or better yet convince a competitor to upgrade (not)

Funny, last night I was discussing with a buddy the need for four channel audio capture on a project we’re putting together so now I am going to be doing a full scale HD test with my FCP 5 system. Since FCP 4.5 only supports 2 channel audio capture, I’ll be moving the Kona 2 over to it along with Final Touch HD to see how it all works

So I’ll report back here in a few days and let you know how the testing goes.
