Did the trash of prefs before no luck…
Not sure about a clean install on OS but FCP might not be. I can try on my laptop which only has FCP and original os with a few updates. Very hard to believe that this is the result of installs done but a couple years ago.

Thanks DID try and move entire disk to a hard drive but whenever I engage the L&T it beach balls.
Also tried in iMovie but no love… Strangley it has worked with certain disks but seems to work only ONCE. The next time I put in the disk it beach balls. Of course never an issue with any other tapeless format I use… guess those are just more professional SxS and XDCAM HD and P2 never an issue/

Is there an outboard transcoder that can make the files Pro Rez just like FCP??

May 16, 2010 at 3:39 am in reply to: FCP crashes when log & transfer GH1 footage

I too am finding that my 6.04 fcp crashes when launching log and transfer. Thing is that in some cases it does not crash and shows me the material on the sdhc card.
I am thinking this is a fcp thing as I see that FCE seems to have no issue with it. My imovie also crashes when I try to load. Of course no issue with any other formats like XDCAM HD disks or P2.
Why has this not been addressed and finally fixed.
Do I need to upgrade to FCP 7??

FInd it pretty hard to believe that a clean install will resolve this problem That is just a massive pain that Apple should address.

Totally agree with you Russell.. So my take is to have at least a two year solution.
TV logic would be nice or maybe just making the JVC/Ikegami do for now. I have two 20m4U sony crts with smpte phosphor but even with the 800 lines of resolution you will still see the interlace lines even if downconverting from HD. How will you make your sony monitors work for you in HD work.. downconvert through ???

Yes… saw the TV logic as well. Once you add the glass in front it does shoot up in price. Can’t recall if it included the scope or not but the one I saw with scope…well the scope simply wasn’t as accurate as the one from Cine tal but of course the price isn’t the same either.
Problem is that they are all 8 bit and they do have off axis issues.
The sony PVM monitors native 16×9 are quite nice but as you know are very expensive (if that is the one you are referring to) The CRT will have better color from my experience and very good off axis support. These are hard to find and really only have 1k or so lines of resolution whereas the LCD and Plasmas do have full resolution.

The technology I was astounded at was the FED stuff… no strobing and great off axis imagery and very good color rendition… just not available yet.

So I assume you are not a big fan of the JVC or its counterpart at Ikegami?
No scopes on those for sure but half the price of TV logic … TV logic had much better glass filter than JVC which was just plastic .

I think most of us are at odds right now as far as monitoring HD signals. If you are color grading you may want to move up to Cine Tal or E cinema products…. both good but LCD and pricey but the Cine Tal has great scope you can put into them making them quite cost effective.
The Panasonic Plasmas at NAB were quite remarkable and some folks from L.A. I met had said many were using those even for color correction not just for plain monitoring.

The JVC mentioned was also quite nice … and reasonable at this point in time. I do know some folks who do strictly color work and opted for the JVC over others even the 25K Trimaster from Sony. I am told Sony may be reducing prices on the Trimaster at some time and had some people indicated to me that the Trimaster was a little over rated and pricey.

Hope this gives you some insights.. For a two year solution I’d go for the JVC

    Thanks Steve

Writing as a 45 year old plus editor I can understand how you would get annoyed at the youthful exuberance of the 30 somethings having been “editors” for but a handful of years.
And , yes I agree that many clients today want something for nothing. I ran into a guy from Australia last year at NAB, and he told me that we should be careful what we wish for because it just may come true. He was referring to the price of equipment and video cards, hard drives, software etc basically pulling the masses into the editing business. He was, of course, correct.. But I guess the question is , what can we do about it. I , too, have to deal with people working out of their basements offering decent services for next to nothing. With a handful of HD decks and over 25 years of post experience, offline and online, I hope I can keep the wolves at bay. I guess we could hope that Sony and other heavy weights just push prices up to a point where it stays professional. Not sure that’s going to happen. Look what happened to the print industry when desktop took over. Basically killed the industry so that everyone could work out of their living room. Without getting took philisophical, I can see that as the level of standards people have for tv programming drops and the hourly programming budgets drop too, the industry in general will have a number of bad years until people decide that cheap programs need to be replaced with some higher end stuff. Let’s hope that happens.

As for NAB, even if you are not a big Apple fan, you must admit the show will be alot duller than it has been for the past several years. As Ron pointed out, the price gouging has to get under control in order to stabilize the trade show industry. That may take some time for them to realize that they must not kill the golden goose.
I for one did not attend for almost 10 years as I found the show to be meaningless and I could find stuff out from local distributors just as readily and without the expense. Apple and Adobe certainly have made the event alot more palatable. Hell if I knew Apple was not going to be there I wouldn’t have booked the trip at all this year.
Still , I think Apple should make a small presence just to handle their huge client base of FCP users.

    Best
