Having been a long time attendee I can honestly say that Apple has made a huge impact on the “NAB feel”, once was stiff and sterile and with the likes of Apple alot more geeky but fun geeky folks. I guess the folks at Adobe will have to fill in the gap… assuming of course they show up this year.
I can honestly say the events and buzz at the events has never been better than the past two years . Last year apple sponsored alot of the FCP user group meeting from the L.A. folks and even solicited ideas on what we, the users, would like to be enhanced on the program. In some way, their absence is saying they no longer value those insights or at least don’t feel that is an important take away as we were lead to believe.

I was aware that NAB folks were doing some price “adjustments” ie huge increases but I am very shocked they were far more than Apple and Avid fealt was beyond their ouch point.

Well… as I indicated earlier… I guess my lineup at the Red won’t be as bad… well… maybe worse… assuming they show up this year.

I guess the big question I have is the lead time issue. Wouldn’t Avid and Apple have put the space on hold and paid up last year. It should take about 6 months for them to create booths and staging not to mention training. For them to cancel 90 days out is pretty strange … they basically already made the financial committment and probably already spent money. Not sure how much they could save. They must have put down some sort of deposit to hold a space that big. This all doesn’t make that much sense for them to pull out this late. Now if they don’t book for next year that’s another thing all together. \
Anyways… it will be a much calmer and less exciting NAB. As for NAB being for broadcasters only… not sure I have seen that …. maybe it will return to the more standard players

    Thanks Ron

I think most of us were aghast when Apple pulled out. The theory of “face Time” certainly applies but really for me it is keeping a birds eye view of the marketplace and certainly NAB is a good place for that. I have not read the entire length of this thread but I am sure most people who have already booked their hotels and flight are pretty P.O.ed indeed.
As I mentioned in another posting I guess now I will have plenty of time to line up at the RED Camera exhibit unless they have imposed even stricter rules to see the device

Is there a chance Apple may do an about face? In your article Ron you mentioned not much flack from users. Any place we can go and tell them that we are not pleased??

    Thanks

    Thanks Derrick

I did know about the dip settings but you had mentioned TWO different 23.98 settings unless you meant 59.94 and 23.98??

I will check the firmware . I assume you are still not able to use the 3/2 option going into AVID but the pulldown DOES work???

Where did you get your card from? Install yourself?

    Yes Derrick

My HDW D 1800 is only a couple months old and I know it shipped with older software. Nice thing about that deck is how you can update, just use a sony memory card in the slot under the panel. Alot easier than it was 20 years ago. Do you find your machine a bit noisy when you turn it on? I will have to get some sort of door on the rack or else fashion a mini equipment room to dull the noise from that deck. My other sony decks are pretty quiet
Where is this setting on the Gen 10 to go from 23.98 to the other 23.98? I never knew ther were two 23.98 settings. Will Sony send you an update memory stick to do the update?

    Hey Derrick

I have the same deck , albeit without the pulldown card. Have you tried setting the ref signal to video rather than external?? Failing that just set the ref setting to AUTO , I think there are two auto settings
I would think on playback that ref would not be an issue. I also use the Gen 10 . That is outputting 59.94 for that deck to record at. Set that ref to 23.98???

I did manage to get a couple emails back from Kristian… fortunately I figured out the problem myself.. I suspect they are knee deep in driver revisions seeing as everything keeps changing around them non stop..

That is an UNBELIEVABLY creative solution to this problem Neil. KUDOS Superb!!
Never would have thought about it. Still no response from the folks at BM?? Odd

  • This timecode insert/assemble problem has been replicated on systems other than BM from my experience. I have used some Kona stuff and the insert point can be off by a frame some times and be perfect the next attempt. It is fine to relay a 30 second spot but obviously anything longer is really just a pain.
As I understand it , this is a FCP issue not a driver issue from BM. The driver does not tell the computer when to release sequence, FCP does.
BM has been great so far and I find it hard to believe that they would leave this issue without coming out with a fix. Apple really should address this.

Not to beat a dead horse but some of us have barely one year old “older macs”. In my case a quad G5 and I am still flabergasted that you can’t use Pro Res with a machine such as that/
I find it hard to believe that a quad Intel is THAT much faster than a Quad G5. In fact, some people have found that there is a marginal difference, ie barefeats, and in some cases the Quad G5 is faster. what bugs me is that Apple wrote that codec solely for those who own Mac Pro machines, which is by far not the greatest amout of users. Most of us upgrade annually or within 18 months but this kind of forces peoples hand to move up sooner than later. Although no one has definatively determined how good Pro Res really is. At NAB they said something about 10 generations but really did not clearly explain what they meant by that. Anyways, I have yet to update my G5s but just did the MacBook Pro and had it crash on using Motion and some of the media from the collection provided by Apple.

I will do way more tests before I move the big machines over. Perhaps I will wait a month till Apple comes up with some new fixes.
