  • FCP crashes when log & transfer GH1 footage

Posted by John Patterson on October 31, 2009 at 4:32 pm

I posted on here a few weeks back on the same topic. I was told to trash my FCP preferences. Did that, but didn’t help. When I go to Log & Transfer, FCP shuts down. So, while I was borrowing a friends GH1, I found that I could throw the footage into Toast. It exported it as a .mov, and it worked beautifully.

Well, I finally have my own GH1, and just shot some footage for the first time yesterday. I opened up Toast, and threw the entire camera file in. It began to export quickly, then it started to slow down. When it was finished, I looked at the thumbnails of all the freshly exported files. The first one was fine, then the next 20 just came up as green screens. They were all the exact same file size too. When I opened up the original .MTS file, the footage is there and opens up fine in Toast Video Player. The last 15 clips I shot, exported fine in Toast.

I shot a couple test shots this morning, and when I go to export them in Toast, they just keep coming up as green screens.

So, I’m totally lost. I can’t figure out anything at this stage. I plugged my camera into my friends MacBookPro, and he’s able to log & transfer my footage with no problem, directly into FCP.

Truly, Truly would appreciate any and all help. Thanks in advance.

The camera shoots AVCHD, and so you need to get it into ProRes to edit it. If your system is crashing when you open the log and transfer window, that’s your real problem.

Post the OS, versions of QuickTime and FCP you’re running right now… also post how you installed the OS you have right now… like as an ‘upgrade’ from a previous OS? When you installed FCS, did you do it cleanly on a clean OS? If not, that’s most likely your problem with the AVCHD files you’re working with.

    I am running 10.5.8 OS X
    Quicktime is 7.6.2
    Final Cut is 6.0.6

This OS is the first one put onto the computer.
I initially had Final Cut 6 installed on the computer.
I got rid of it by using the Final Cut Uninstaller.
Then I got a version of Final Cut 6.

It’s just really weird with Toast now. Last week I was able to capture an entire production through Toast, and edit it perfectly.

Now when I use Toast, everything comes up with an offline green screen. I’m wondering if it may be my SDHC card. I was initially using it with a Canon T1i, but I formatted it before using it with my GH1. I’ve formatted it several times, but it’s still now working.

Should I invest in the Elgato Turbo .264?

I really appreciate your help Jerry, and I invite any suggestions on what I should do. I’ve been thinking of upgrading to Final Cut 7. Let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks,

    John

I too am finding that my 6.04 fcp crashes when launching log and transfer. Thing is that in some cases it does not crash and shows me the material on the sdhc card.
I am thinking this is a fcp thing as I see that FCE seems to have no issue with it. My imovie also crashes when I try to load. Of course no issue with any other formats like XDCAM HD disks or P2.
Why has this not been addressed and finally fixed.
Do I need to upgrade to FCP 7??

FInd it pretty hard to believe that a clean install will resolve this problem That is just a massive pain that Apple should address.

Try copying the files from the card to a hard drive, and then import them…
