This feature is working with my Aurora Pipe Pro and Pipe Studio cards. Aurora doesn’t mention this as a feature of their card so I’ve got to assume that it’s FCP 5 doing the work and not the flavor of card or driver that you possess. I haven’t installed FCP 5 on our Kona2 system yet, but I’m sure I’ll get the same results.

If you really know what you are doing than you can easily build this yourself. You can find ADC patchbays on e-bay for several hundred dollars. We build all our cables ourselves but you need the tools and the knowhow. However, I would suspect you’re of the “This is my first edit system” crowd who purchased an IO box because Apple said to. If that’s the case than I would follow Tony’s advice and hire a professional to do this for you. I hate to break it to you, but you’ve got to spend money to make money.Michael Alberts

We run both analog component and composite through these boxes as well as SDI. Every can rout to any piece of equipment both in the edit rooms or the machine room. Deck control is switched via an A/B/C/D box which also runs into the machine room. Most audio patching is done via the Mackie 1604VLZ mixers in the rooms. All our rooms are equipped with Aurora Pipe Studio cards or Kona2 cards, however the basic concept works the same with the IO box.

You’re looking for the Merge Clip feature. You can merge based on in/out points or timecode.

May 6, 2005 at 7:00 pm in reply to: Converting 16×9 footage to 4×3 center punch outputI don’t know why everybody is having such a hard time grasping this center crop issue with 16×9 footage. I you use Peter’s method you get a soft image due to the blow-up. Not acceptable. I’ve asked AJA many times to include a SD aspect ratio conversion option in the Kona2. We’ll see if they add this in the future for SD.
I’ve done dozens of shows where we had do deliver both a 16×9 master and a 4:3 master. Since I was dealing with over 18 hours of finished programming I went with a hardware converter from Eyeheight. the model is the SQ-500. This is an all SDI solution that works great. This box is idiot proof. It does just about any type of conversion you want. Their tech support staff it top notch. These hardware boxes are a bit pricey, but well worth it. You can check around in your area if you just want to rent one.If you want to do this the poor-mans method in FCP then just nest your show into another 16×9 sequence, open up the Motion tab for the sequence and use the Distort tool to adjust the Vertical parameters of the clip. By doing this you get a pixel to pixel adjustment on the vertical scale which doesn’t add a blow-up. So, if you were working with DV (720×480) material you would adjust the fist column of numbers in the Distort window to -480, 480, 480, -480. Done. Perfect 4:3 with no image degradation. I could be slightly off on the calculation of the 480 number. If someone would like to figure out the exact number, if I’m the least bit off I would love to hear it.

This has been gone over many times here on this forum. You can do a search for more info. But the tool you will want to use is:

There may be other alternatives.

Mac virus software? What’s that?

It would have been nice if FCP 5 was rewritten in Cocoa and gotten rid of all it’s legacy Carbon programming. This is probably why FCP 5 still can’t do any background rendering or any background processing for that matter. Even Pinnacle’s crappy little editor Edition can do background rendering. We’re on Mac OSX using Unix and the BSD kernel, this should be a no-brainer. Try doing an Export To Compressor from FCP and wait an hour for your one hour program to export. This is why most people just use Export/QuickTime Movie to make a reference file. It’s a shame, since it’s been essentially 2 years since FCP 4 was released. Here’s hoping for a more modern FCP 6.
Kevin is correct, the only app that supports the distributed rendering process is Compressor. No FCP support for such an essential task.

And where exactly would you find the “decompose” menu in FCP? This isn’t an Avid. The Media Manager should work well for you. Just be aware that freeze frames and clips with speed changes MAY come out a bit screwy.
