I see that Qmaster is included in Final Cut Studio. I know that this is used for distrubuted rendering in Shake. Does anyone know if it is just for FCP or does it work with some or all of the programs in Studio? Can anyone out there tell us what using Qmaster is like? It is the only part of Studio that is not well documented on the Studio web pages.

I believe Compressor is the only app in Studio that runs with QMaster. Distributed encoding is the job it will do, AFAIK.

It would have been nice if FCP 5 was rewritten in Cocoa and gotten rid of all it’s legacy Carbon programming. This is probably why FCP 5 still can’t do any background rendering or any background processing for that matter. Even Pinnacle’s crappy little editor Edition can do background rendering. We’re on Mac OSX using Unix and the BSD kernel, this should be a no-brainer. Try doing an Export To Compressor from FCP and wait an hour for your one hour program to export. This is why most people just use Export/QuickTime Movie to make a reference file. It’s a shame, since it’s been essentially 2 years since FCP 4 was released. Here’s hoping for a more modern FCP 6.

Kevin is correct, the only app that supports the distributed rendering process is Compressor. No FCP support for such an essential task.
