That’s been an annoyance ever since we upgraded all our system to FCP 5. The text window for Reel, Name etc seems to erase the contents on the slightest modification. There is a method to getting it work properly, by using the arrow key, but it’s definitely busted since v.4.5.

From my experience, the larger the volume, the longer Capture Now takes to estimate the drive space allocation. This has always been true. There was a new driver for the XServe RAID that may or may not have reduced this problem. I’m surprised that you haven’t experienced it before. If you want to start Capture Now immediately you can select another smaller drive as your Capture Scratch and move the media later. Capture Now to your internal drive will be almost instantaneous.

Boris Continuum Complete 3 has a great Spotlight filter. I’ve used it on many ocasions. Works great.

What is your need for a trilevel sync generator. I would assume by your question that you are doing 24P HD work, because that’s the only reason you would need one. There are no “chaep” tri-level sync generators on the market. The chaepest thing to come along is a new product from Blackmagic that has a tri-level syn built in. I don’t believe it’s shipping yet. Check their web site. Otherwise, you gotta spend the big bucks to play with the big boys.

Insert editing via Firewire isn’t supported by most DV decks. You can insert on a DSR1500 and above using RS-422.

I have the exact same problem. After about one week of running the XServe RAID won’t shut off manually, no matter how long I hold down the power button. After a power restart by yanking the power cords (very bad) all is well again with the RAID. One week later I notice one bank of activity lights on the RAID no longer move. At that point RAID Admin tools can’t connect to the box and the power won’t restart again. I’ve replaced both RAID controllers to no avail. Warranty has expired now with no solution. Yikes. Other than these symptoms the box runs fine.
I wish I had a solution for you. I’ll contact you if I ever find a solution for my similar problem.

Find another neg cutter. Seriously. In addition to all the Avid shows I’ve cut, I’ve edited several features on FCP and neg cut with CT cut lists. It’s never been a big problem. The optical lists are what give me real problems. I just started cutting another 35mm feature this week. I’m starting off with FCP5 and CT 3.0. I’m grateful that Apple finally integrated some of the features of CT into FCP. It’s only a one way street, but that’s better than nothing. I’ll be playing around more with CT in the coming months. I’d be interested to see if CT can flag a flop as an optical yet. Got bit by that “oversight” several times.
Normally I use the Aurora Igniter to do the reverse telecine in RT. However, I thought I would try the DV/CT reverse telecine process on this film. After a few major hiccups in the workflow I’m getting into a rhythm now. At this point there don’t seem to be any major upgrades to CT other than better FCP integration. Time will tell.
The resistance of a negative cutter to Cinema Tools cut lists shouldn’t be a hold up for using FCP and CT to cut a 35mm feature. There are plenty of neg cutters out there who will gladly work with you.

Zooming in on the track does not expand the height of the waveform. It only shows more detail in an already flat waveform. Most video and audio edit programs give you theis ability. Of course Vegas does this nicely, as does ProTools, DP, Logic, Peak and now Soundtrack Pro, but not FCP.

This request has been made over and over by myself and others to people directly on the FCP team. I started asking for this back at FCP 2. I was disappointed, again, that it hasn’t been implemented in FCP 5. But the FCP rep told me it was implemented in Soundtrack Pro. That still doesn’t solve the problem however. Oh well, there’s always FCP 6 (18 months from now).

No, Compressor doesn’t mux your MPEG2 and auido file. However the free Bitvice Helper will do it once you’ve created the MPEG2 in Compressor.Michael Alberts
