In a slo-mo shot of a football game I need to draw a circle around a player to highlight him. I could put a mask over the whole shot that was 75% dark, leaving the one player in the clear. But it turns out I need do draw a thick white arrow pointing to him, or draw a circle around him during the shot. Would someone please help? What’s the best way to do this? Thanks.

Copy the clip into track 2 so that you have two duplicate clips stacked one on top of the other. Apply the color corrector to the top clip and bring down the black level slightly. In your browser go video filters> matte> mask shape and apply the mask shape to the top clip. Double click the the top clip to open it in your viewer. Change the mask shape to oval. Check the invert box in the mask shape filter. You should now have an oval cut out of the darker layer essentialy highlighting a point on the untouched layer underneath. Adjust the oval’s parameters to get it where you want it and the size you want it. Hope this is clear and helpful.

Boris Continuum Complete 3 has a great Spotlight filter. I’ve used it on many ocasions. Works great.

A more creative approach would be to hire two sexy girl cheerleaders with a giant arrow on a stick run ahead of the player on the sidelines.

Who said you have to fix everything in post?

Thank you everyone for the excellent, detailed advice. I’m off to work on it tonight.

I think I would type a great big “o” in the type tool, then have it transition on with a soft edged clock wipe so it appears to be drawn on.
