    Mel,
While I will agree with you that the MM is one of FCP’s weakest links that Avid users can point to it’s not as dire as you make it out to be. We online FCP shows here about once a week. Other than the freeze frame and speed change issues the MM works fairly well. You don’t have to jump through as many hoops as you detailed in your post.
Another scenario that the FCP MM seems get wrong every time is in the handling of audio files that no longer has picture associated with it. For example, if you had a 30 minute sequence of video clips on V1 and one long 30 minute clip of audio on A1 the MM wouldn’t parse out the video from the audio on A1. In other words, when you recapture the sequence FCP will digitize both the audio and video for the 30 minute audio clip when all you wanted was the audio. In cases like this we just delete the audio from a duplicate sequence and MM that. Then copy the audio from your offline sequence over.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that FCP 5 address’ most of these MM issues. We’ll know in a 2-5 weeks when it finally ships.

  • I’ve been using Boris RED for several years now when stabalizing within FCP. Works great. No need to leave FCP. However, RED is a bit expensive if you only need it for the one function.

[Rastus Washington] “The ONLY item that keeps me using Avid is the fact that I can lasso a transition on the timeline and trim while seeing the A and B side from layered video tracks. If Final Cut Pro had this functionality I’d have been gone from Avid many years ago.”

You mean the FCP trim window which pops up when you double click on an edit point. You can lasso it if you want by hitting the G key and then lasso the cut. Both methods pop up the trim window where you see your A and B sides of the cut. The FCP trim window works much like the Avid trim window, although not as elegant and fluid.

I demoed the Avid running on a MacII fx at MacWorld 1992 but held out buying one until the Quadra versions were shipping. Those Quadra boxes just lasted forever. I couldn’t agree more with Mark’s sentiment in the response below.

  • I’ve been in communication with Tektronix to port their WFMNLE plug-in over to FCP. It’s currently available for the AVX Avid architecture at the moment. Some reps from the company flew down to Los Angeles to meet with me and a few other users that I put together. It was a very promising meeting. I also ran into one of the Tektronix engineers, who was at the meeting, at the Tektronix NAB booth. He was showing the WFMNLE app at the booth. He told me that only two people HADN”T asked if the plug in ran on FCP. I hope they got the hint. It’s a great plug in. You can check it out on their site.

You can read the spec on the product. It’s a measurement tool, not a legalizer. But it’s a damn good measurement tool. It would be good if people politely emailed Tektronix a request for this plug in to be ported over to FCP. I’m sure there is some politics and economics involved in developing this app. Let them know you would be willing to support it.

  • Uwe,
I know of a few FCP post houses here in Los Angeles using that box also. We also use it on a “as needed” basis. In fact I’ve been renting it so much that I’ll be buying one for the facility next week. We received a quote of $4500. This is a SD only box. I took a look at their HD-SDI box at NAB this week. That mode, the HD-850 costs $9000. A bit too steep for me. Besides, the HD version only does HD, not SD.

In Cinema Tool select FILE/EXPORT/CONVERTED EDL. Then tell CT where the 30fps EDL is and then tell it where to save the new conveted 24fps EDL. It’s really not that hard.

From all I’ve read the Decklink SP card is not a 10 bit card but rather an 8 bit card. See this thread on the Decklink forum. I checked the Decklink site and it appears they advertise the card to support 10 bit output, which may be true, but they make no mention of the input stream.

That ship sailed many years ago. The day Avid woke up and started to compete with FCP on a software only level was the time for Media 100 to do the same.
