I have a sequence (40min) that I want to up-res. In the sequence there are some slo-mo clips. Is the decompose function in FCP reliable? I’ve heard lot’s of things about the media manager, mostly bad. Can I avoid the media manager if I decompose my sequence? And is the decompose frame accurate?
    Thanks,

And where exactly would you find the “decompose” menu in FCP? This isn’t an Avid. The Media Manager should work well for you. Just be aware that freeze frames and clips with speed changes MAY come out a bit screwy.

one possible way to avoid speed-change weirdness when Media Managing:

find all your speed modifued clips in your timeline (involves a boring manual search)
place copies of them at the end of your program.
remove attibutes: Speed, so you have just the unafected frames you need.

this has been known to “protect” the speed mod shots from weirdness.
and if it doesnt, then at least you have the frames you need to re-build the effects.

rather than putting the shots at the end of the timeline,
another approach would be to create a new track JUST for these shots.
then you could have the un-modified versions sitting direclty above the modified ones.

if you take your sequence and use the make clips indepenent you get all of your clips as if you were decopsing in an avid, oh and just to give you a heads up on the speed change worries, avid screws up the speed changes in the decomps from time to time also. your best rule of thumb is this, name or mark your effects with tabs and save them in a effects bin. remove them before you do the decomp and when your done add them back. it doesnt take much time at all, how many speed effects could you have.
