February 6, 2006 at 3:40 am in reply to: Final Cut crashing while using still photosIf your workin in FCP 4 than you need to consider to dimensions of the still. If it’s over 4000×40000 pixels your going to have issues in FCP. Graphics that size will slow FCP down to a crawl, and if you don’t have enough RAM could cause other issues. For you sanity the still doesn’t need to be more that twice your screen rez.

If you just want a still then follow the advice for Cmnd-Shift-4. If you want the flash content in motion then you will need to use something like Snapz Pro X

In my 15 years of editing I don’t think I’ve ever had to add a lightning bolt to a shot. So, I wouldn’t even call that a “feature”. However, if I ever did want a lighting bolt, snow, rain, particle effects etc I just pop one of my BCC4 filers on the shot, all from within FCP. No need for an external interface, it’s simply a plug-in.
The whole Avid vs. FCP discussion has gotten so repetitive and boring it’s not even worth discussing. Just search the archive for the 50 or 60 separate threads on the subject. We were running four Avid Meredian 9000’s that we paid approx $100,00 EACH for four years ago. We’ve since ditched those systems and installed all FCP. We’re a much leaner, meaner, cost effective company for it. No need to bend over for the Avid upgrades and annual support fees. That can drain the company coffers in a hurry. Now we spend money on talent and software.

I can’t be reading your post right. You stated that you’ve got your FCP sequence codec setting set to H.264. I must have misread that. There are no easy setup in FCP that would allow for a H.264 sequence setting. Why? Because that would be insane. H.264 is a web delivery medium and is extremely render intensive. It’s about a 6:1 render time for H.264.
So, I must be misinterpreting what you’re saying. Could you restate your problem.Michael Alberts

“You cannnot reverse telecine to 23.98 only to 24p. any other suggestions?”
Are you sure about that? The last two features I’ve cut were reversed telecined in Cinema Tools to 23.98 and worked perfectly.
Make sure you’re following the correct workflow. Are your FLEX files importing properly. Check the start frames to make sure they start on 00 or 05’s. Are the Beta tapes non-drop-frame? They should be. Make sure the device control in the FCP preset knows this. Double check the clips digitize on the 00 or 05 frame. Trash your Cinema Tools prefs and start from scratch assigning a default for the reverse telecine method.
If all else fails just use a capture card like the Aurora PipeStudio, AJA IO or AJA Kona LH or Kona2.Michael Alberts

You never mentioned what codec your working with in FCP. If you’re working in DV you’ll likely see this issue pop up quite often. The Apple DV codec seems to have problems with reds. We do most of our work in DV 50, 8 bit uncompressed or 10 bit and therefore never see this problem. Occasionally we’ll do an offline job in DV and see the problem you’re describing.

FCP is doing what it’s supposed to do, play four discreet channels to four discreet outputs. If you would like to hear all for track at once you need to do one of two things. Either route the four channels out of the IO into four channels on your mixers and pan those to outputs 1&2 of your mixer or right click the track selector section of the timeline for channels A3 and A4 and change those from 3&4 to 1&2.

Even though this is supposed to be a real time effect, try to force render the effect and see if that fixes things. Otherwise you’re going to have to use the keyframe method which will work. What type of title is this, a Boris Title 3D title or a crappy FCP generated title. If it’s a FCP title make sure the whites aren’t too hot. You’re best of going with a Title 3D title.
