  • Final Cut crashing while using still photos

Posted by Warren Watson on February 5, 2006 at 6:58 pm

I’m having trouble w/ FCP (v4.1) crashing when I try to use a still photo (in JPEG format). I can import from a CD, thumb drive or another disk with no problem, but within 5 seconds after I click on a still image, FCP crashes. Anyone have any idea why this happens and how to fix it? I had this problem a few years ago, but it only happened once in a while. This time it’s happening w/ every photo.

    Thanks,
    Warren

Sounds like they’re either too big (try reducing resolution – video only requires 72dpi) or they’re CMYK (FCP needs RGB – change it in Photoshop under Image> Mode > RGB Colour

Try trashing the preferences. Download FCP rescue…the FCP 4 version.

How big are these pictures? Dimensions?

If your workin in FCP 4 than you need to consider to dimensions of the still. If it’s over 4000×40000 pixels your going to have issues in FCP. Graphics that size will slow FCP down to a crawl, and if you don’t have enough RAM could cause other issues. For you sanity the still doesn’t need to be more that twice your screen rez.

    Hi –

I’ve had this issue from time to time as well, though it doesn’t always seem consistent in terms of how large an image it takes to lock up/crash FCP. With that said, I have found that the vertical dimension seems to be the one that causes the most heartache. I know that sounds odd, but, if you’re like me, you don’t always get handed images which are in either 4:3 or 16:9 — they are sometimes huge vertically.

Thanks for your help and I went back to check the info you gave me. Here is what I have:
    – They are all JPEGs at 72dpi.
    – none are more than 800 x 600
    – All are in RGB, none in CMYK
    – I have a few I’m trying to use for lower 3rds where the original size is 600 x 150 (which will be reduced for the lower 3rd).

About 5-10 seconds I click on the image and it pops into the viewer, it’ll crash. I don’t even get a chance to change the size, add a blur or even put it straight into the timeline before it crashes. I wonder if changing the files to a PSD or TIF would help.

    Thanks,
    Warren

Well, I just changed a couple of the files to a TIF and a PNG file, same thing, constant crash. I’m perplexed. Is the bar open yet? 😉

How much RAM do you have? Have you increased the still image cache size? May be bad RAM.

    All the best,

Just for kicks, try changing the size by a few pixels and re-saving. I’ve had that work (for no apparent reason) from time to time.

I had similar issuess consistently whenever I used version 4.x w/jpeg files. Usually, a “green screen” would appear where I previously had a jpeg image. Very often, FCP would crash when i had jpegs in my sequence. When I convert them to PICT, the problem always goes away. With FCP 5.x I have been able to use jpegs without a hiccup.

You are not importing the file in FCP directly from a CD are you?
If so FCP is just linking to the file on the CD and I can totally see this causing issues (especially if you remove the CD!)
    Good luck,
    Mike
