Are you media managing from the timeline? What if you media manage from the browser in 2 batches, one with all 4:3 clips and the next with just anamorphic?

You’d have to relink the media in your time line afterward.

Do you need it to be HD? If you can capture it as SD that will be much faster/easier to work with than HD.

ProRes HQ is higher quality than Pro Res. (10bit vs. 8bit) and HQ is a larger file.

I think Compressor does a better job of taking advantage of multi-core machines than FCP does, so I would recommend that.

    Does that help?

Hmmm… haven’t had this exact problem, but here’s what I would try (on one clip to see if it works): Uncheck Anamorphic from your original clip and then Media Manage. That should give you a 720×576 Uncompressed clip on output. Then bring this new clip back into FCP and try checking the Anamorphic box.

Duplicate your sequence that has the 720×480 settings to keep as a backup in case you screw something up.
Next, right-click your sequence in the browser and select “Settings”
In the bottom left corner of the window that opens, you will see “Load Sequence preset”. Click it and choose the correct preset. You will probably be warned your editing timebase will not be changed.

Now you have the proper sequence settings (except for timebase) and your video surrounded by black. Select all of your clips and choose “Remove Attribute”. Choose Basic motion and distort. Click OK.

You should now have full frame HD video.

Finally, select all of the media in your timeline. Hit “cmd+x” to cut ALL media from your timeline. Right click on your sequence in the browser again and change the frame rate to the frame rate you need it to be (probably 59.94 for 720p). Click OK. Paste all of you media back in to the timeline bu hitting “cmd+v”

I know some of that may seem redundant, but it’s important to make sure you use a sequence preset so you don’t introduce other problems.

And yes the G-Tech drives are very fast. READ speeds in the 300MB range and writes faster than that. I have been happy with the drives (had them for just over a year) and their support staff is almost AJA-like!

Bob, as the poster below correctly guessed it is FCP’s audio mixer that seems to cause the dropped frames. You may be right about the static electricity problem though: Now that’s it’s winter here in Wisconsin I get a wicked shock every time I touch my Mac Book Pro. I suspect you are right however, that is not causing my Mac Pro to drop frames!

I actually have had this problem for a while. I did an erase and install when upgrading to Leopard a few months ago but that had no effect on this playback glitch.

November 6, 2008 at 8:19 pm in reply to: issues with Pro Res (HQ)…

I gave up on using Pro Res in AE months ago! I always render to Uncompressed or Animation when going in and out of AE (any version since AE 7). I’ve found bringing footage in tends to have a gamma issue and the only way I’ve found around it is to use a levels adjustment. Same goes for exporting out of AE.

If there is a solution I’m all ears, but in the meantime try re-compressing to a lossless format and see if you still have issues.

Nevermind, like always the search button held the answer…

  • Is there a switch to choose which input Composite/S-Video, etc.

Do you have a TBC there? Try running the VHS through a TBC to stabalize the video. In order to get the cable TV signal at my ofice on a plasma (hooked up with SDI), I have to send it through a VCR with TBC so the DA Converter can work with the crappy signal.
