If you right click on a clip you can adjust Audio Gain, which is in addition to the fader adjustments you can make.

However, if you just want to lower other system sounds and have Premiere be full volume, I use a program called Soundbunny (https://www.prosofteng.com/products/soundbunny.php) It lets you adjust (most) applications volumes discreetly. It was a good use of $10 I think

Hadn’t seen that X-files program before, thanks for mentioning it. Looks like it could be pretty useful. Even just the part that creates and resizes sparse bundles looks much better than using Terminal all the time

Thanks for the quick feedback. I’m glad to hear I can stop troubleshooting this performance issue as it’s not recommended anyway.

July 30, 2013 at 4:12 pm in reply to: Sparse Bundle Users: How do you backup?

Looks like a lot of good info on this thread already, but I’ll add my solution (it’s worked well so far…)

I’ve been keeping my events on a separate image than my projects. This works well for me for two reasons: 1) I tend to have video that I use across multiple projects, so I can start a new project with an Event I’ve already keyworded, etc and not have the old project cluttering up FCPX; 2) The Images with the Events are large and don’t need to be backed up as often as the project files do. So I have just the project file on a small disk image that backs up quickly. I add a “_X” to the end of the file name to distinguish it from the event image, but this could be anything. (As long as it’s consistent it lets you do this next part.)

I’ve also set up an Automator action to make daily backups of any file that ends in “_X.sparsebundle” to another drive.

There are also some Terminal commands that let you either resize the Image to make it larger if you need to, or compact the image and reclaim free space when you have deleted Render Files or Transcoded media before you archive the project. Reminds me of my days dealing with the Avid Unity system!

May 14, 2013 at 6:51 pm in reply to: Backup Strategy Advice

I have been using the same media across a few projects lately and I stumbled on to a system that works pretty well in those cases. I keep my Events and Projects on Sparseimages but I have been splitting them up. So, I’ll import all my camera footage to one sparseimage with “_footage” or something in the name. I can mount the image, do all my keywording, etc and then when it’s time to start a project I create another disk image, with “_X” at the end (I’ll get back to this in a second). I’ll create an Event on that sparseimage with audio, VO, renders from AE, and other project specific items.

There are a few things I like about splitting them up:

I can use the same media in several projects without having to have all the projects open (or I can mount the images and have them open if I need to).
I have an Automator task setup to nightly back up all the sparseimage files that have “_X” in the name. This keeps my project backups manageable size-wise and I’m not cloning footage.
All of my imported camera media is in one diskimage when it comes time to back up.

May 1, 2013 at 9:15 pm in reply to: Google Earth KMZ files into FCP

It’s been a while since I’ve used Google Earth, but isn’t there a way to export Quicktime movies from the application? Save them out as ProRes files and they should import into FCPX just like anything else

  • I had been wondering this myself, but forgot about it. I just set up an Automator action that seems like it will do what I need:
    —————–
    1st Action:
Find all files that contain “.sparse” in the name that are inside of the “Project Files” folder (I keep projects and events in sparse images and link to the media that lives in my Capture Scratch–some habits die hard)

    2nd Action:
    Copy Finder Items

    3rd Action:
Add Date or Time (should give me an Autosave Vault-like list of files)
    ————
Then just save it as a Calendar Alarm and you can schedule it as often as you like

Like I said, I just tried this, so no guarantees, but I think it should be better than nothing!

EDIT: Also, once you do it the first time, it looks like you can add a “last modified today” to the find action so it will just copy the images that have been modified

September 1, 2011 at 5:10 pm in reply to: Apple progress FCP X, Anything to report?

Here’s the latest update I’ve seen. Has to do with the XML API:

    Date: Thu, 1 Sep 2011 09:47:58 -0700

Sometimes doing things right takes longer than expected. It is still on the way. We have not announced an exact release date.

If you were editing in 1080, I bet the timeline was set to work in fields (even if you shot in progressive). So when you added transitions that it had to render on export, it created 1080i media in those spots. Try changing the field dominance in the sequence settings to none and re-export.

November 19, 2010 at 7:12 pm in reply to: Seeking Advice – Considering Snow Leopard…again

I finally updated yesterday and so far so good. As for Boris, I installed the trial version of BCC 3D objects for AE CS5 and it has worked as advertised.

Be sure to install Quicktime 7 after you update to SL. You have to put the disk in and update it via the “optional Installs” folder.

BTW, I second the Carbon Copy Cloner advice. I erase and install (although that option is missing from the SL update) and I always forget to copy some file over before I erase. Luckily everything is cloned on a hard drive in the drawer.
