You can download the ever-useful Aja Data Rate calculator to see just how much disk space the DVCProHD codec is saving you compared to, say, Uncompressed.

Scroll to the bottom of this page: https://aja.com/support_kona.html and look for AJA Data Rate Calculator Application (Version 1.2)

[Guy] “Question 1: Can I RAID drives of two different sizes reliably with no performance issues? I am ok with loosing some disk space in the RAID process.”

Yes. The RAID will format based on the smallest drive, so you will loose some storage space, but otherwise this is fine to do.

I never had much luck with skinning through QuickTime, or with QTVR. Check out LiveStage https://www.totallyhip.com/livestage.asp It’s a bit pricey, but it will probably let you do things you never knew you wanted too. They have a free 30-day demo you can play with

March 29, 2006 at 3:40 pm in reply to: editing with FCP on Intel Mac

Yes, FCP 5.0.4 does not run at it’s native speed on intel macs. I haven’t used it, but I would imagine it would be quite a performance hit. But, you are in luck, the new Universal FCP Studio (with FCP 5.1) was just released. Here’s info on how to crossgrade for $49 to the new version: https://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/

That said, if you are not the kind of person who likes to discover the new bugs and quirks of the latest and greatest, I would recomend using FCP 5.0.4 on a G5 mac instead.

March 27, 2006 at 3:29 pm in reply to: G5 USB 2 with P2 Store

To see if your P2 Store is truely connecting as USB 2, go to the blue Apple in the top left corner of your screen and choose “About This Mac” and then select “More info..” from the info panel.

The P2 store should show up under USB High Speed if it’s being recognized as USB 2. If not, could it be a bad cable?

March 23, 2006 at 10:22 pm in reply to: MPG’s created in FCP not compatible with PC.

I’ve got a client that likes to get spots in MPEG-2 also for use on a PC. We ran into the same problem. The solution: A free program called MPEG Streamclip (Google it).

    Here’s the step by step:
    1. Create an MPEG-2 and AIF of the spot. Be sure the two files are named the same EXCEPT for the file type extension.
    2. Open “MPEG Streamclip”
    3. From the File menu, select “Open Files…”. Select your “.m2v” clip. The audio file should follow along.
    4. From the File menu, select “Convert to MPEG with MP2 Audio…”
    5. Save the file

It only takes a couple seconds to convert, and you wind up with a “.mpeg” that works on a PC.

The free Digital Anarchy pluginss that came with AE 6 don’t work with AE 7. Remove them from your plug ins folder and the error will go away

March 15, 2006 at 8:19 pm in reply to: problem with Shine!

What if instead of using an adjustment layer for Shine, put the Shine effect directly onto the layer you want the rays. Then apply the “grow bounds” (or something like that – sorry my AE machine is rendering right now) effect in the image control menu to that Shine layer to avoid the rays getting cut off. Depending how long your rays are it might take a while to render, but I think it’d be easier to manage than putting it in another comp.
