MPG’s created in FCP not compatible with PC.
Hi guys,
I have started receiving mpg’s from another company that does all his work in FCP, to the point of creating the MPG2 video files. My Adtec mpg player will play them, but there are times that I need to make adjustments in audio, or do a minor squeeze so the safe title is within the realm of a marquee that is not standard.My problem is that I am unable to play or open his mpg’s in any of my programs on my PC. This is the first I have received created in FCP. I have no problems with anyone elses files created on any platform, with any other editing program. Any suggestions, or ideas why this is happening?

This issue is not typical of MPEG2 files created in FCP or using Compressor. I routinely create MPEG2 files from FCP and use them in a host of PC apps including Procoder 2, and ReelDVD. If you want me to check out a file for you, send a small test to “drw at drwfilms dot com” and I’ll se what I can see.

As far as I know FCP will only export MPEG4 files. Perhaps this is what he’s given you. Either way I would suggest getting the lastest version of quicktime 7. If you have a pro version than you can export with another codec or file type.

Hey I just read David’s post and checked the final cut manual and you can export Mpeg2s so ignore that. However, for some reason my quicktime conversion export does not have this option. Does anyone have any ideas on that topic either?

Yep Dave, that is what I do with my Mac based Avid. II then network over to my PC and convert to MPG2 for use in my Adtec players, and for all the other Harrah’s (formerly Caesars properties) in Las Vegas. Have never had a problem with compatibility until this guy started doing some work for other entities that use our systems. I get mpg files from all over the country with no problems. We use the DVD compliant settings. The best codec I have found for conversiion into MPG2 from any format I have tried so far, is the Main Concepts used in Vegas Video. Beats the heck out of the one I have for my Priemere Pro.
I was just wondering if anyone else using FCP had come across this problem before.
I tried to talk to the guy about it to find a solution but he became very defensive and uncooperative, so I dropped it immediately.

I’ve got a client that likes to get spots in MPEG-2 also for use on a PC. We ran into the same problem. The solution: A free program called MPEG Streamclip (Google it).
Here’s the step by step:
1. Create an MPEG-2 and AIF of the spot. Be sure the two files are named the same EXCEPT for the file type extension.
2. Open “MPEG Streamclip”
3. From the File menu, select “Open Files…”. Select your “.m2v” clip. The audio file should follow along.
4. From the File menu, select “Convert to MPEG with MP2 Audio…”
5. Save the fileIt only takes a couple seconds to convert, and you wind up with a “.mpeg” that works on a PC.
