Edward’s suggestion works in Vegas Movie Studio 10, so I guess it also works in Pro 10… not sure about earlier versions. This technique to spreading/bunching up keyframes is demonstrated in the Vasst tutorial DVD that comes with the boxed VMS.

I don’t know why the text event doesn’t auto-lengthen when you extend it on the timeline… maybe to keep the behaviour the same as for video events.

You can use the “Match Event Length” button on the Generated Media editor window (button looks like a mini timeline selection) to make the event’s length the same as your lengthened timeline event, instead of the default length of 10 secs or whatever. Then it won’t have to loop.

There’s only a potential problem with media that are used in your project (this might include all media in the project pool). You can probably browse/open media that are used, but won’t be able re-save.

Other media shouldn’t be affected at all.

Just tried dragging the bottom edge of the docked preview window down as far as possible. This covers up the status bar, transport controls… and you lose the draggable window border too so it becomes impossible to resize (and it’s not hidden under the Windows start bar either). The only way out is to restore the default layout from the menu.

You can do the same default layout trick in Movie Studio 10… presumably in 9 also.

Something to try, which helped for me… In general preferences, UNcheck “Close media files when not the active app”. This will prevent you opening/editing media in other apps (which I tend not to do), but for me made it much faster switching between apps like an image browser and VMS.

If you can’t already see it (normally docked next to the output preview window), turn on the Mixer window which has the output audio level meters. These show you how “hot” your audio is. If they go into the red above 0dB (positive values, clipping) you need to back off the levels on one or more audio tracks. For Youtube videos, you can aim for levels approaching 0dB.

If you can’t get the long takes stitched together into continuous footage before importing into Vegas, try turning off Quickfade Audio Edits on the Options menu when you import to stop Vegas inserting its own “edge smoothing” fades (default 10ms I think) between adjacent audio events. That might take care of the audio glitch between segments of otherwise continuous footage.

I also get annoyed by the spacebar not working unless focus is on the timeline. It’s mostly not a problem because that’s where the focus happens to be when I hit space, but it gets me occasionally. Need to get used to Ctrl+Space.

I assume you cannot have spacebar as a global “play” shortcut because that would always prevent you typing spaces in text media, marker names etc.

Another option is the “play” media hotkey on multimedia keyboards. The extra media hotkeys do a useful assortment of things in Vegas.

Taping Alt+Space could cause problem using the Alt key for other things – plenty of keyboard shortcuts use Alt.

You should be able to import the DVD footage directly in Vegas. On the Project menu, click Import DVD Camcorder Disc. You just choose the disc to import from, and where to put the extracted files. You’ll then have one or more MPG files that you can edit as desired.
