audio blips with Focus recorder and Vegas
Posted by Robert Billings on February 21, 2011 at 2:45 pmI am recording a long music program on 720 30p with a Focus Enhancements recorder and editing with Vegas 10c. On the timeline at the points where the recorder breaks the long program into individual clips, the audio contains a “blip”. The video is smooth at these same edit points. Do I have a setting wrong somewhere?
Thanks,

February 21, 2011 at 3:13 pmHow are you importing the video into Vegas Pro? Are you using the Device Explorer? If not, did Focus Enhancements provide you will a program to stitch the files back together again?

February 21, 2011 at 4:41 pmJohn,
I am copying the files from the Focus Enhancements to a folder on my hard drive, then opening Vegas, creating a new project and using the “import media” button to bring the files into the project.
Seems like I didn’t have this problem with earlier versions of Vegas.
I did not receive any stitching software from Focus Enhancements.
Thanks, Robert -

February 21, 2011 at 4:48 pmAfter checking the Focus Enhancements website, it may be that I need a firmware upgrade for my JVC HD100 camera to better work with the Focus Enhancements FS4 recorder. Checking on that.

You might want to try the Vegas Device Explorer and see if it recognizes the Focus. If it does, this will copy the files onto your hard drive for you stitching them as it goes. (at least that’s what it does for the Sony recorders)

I see… well… let us know how you make so that others will know what to do when they get this problem. Good luck.

February 21, 2011 at 5:43 pmJust now did a firmware upgrade to my JVC HD110U camera. Will run a test this afternoon and post my findings. I suspect this was the problem, as the description of the upgrade addressed the problem I was having. -Robert

February 21, 2011 at 9:00 pmI upgraded the firmware on my JVC GY-HD110U and all went well with the upgrade. I ran a 45 minute continuous roll into the FS4 at 720 30P and on the Vegas timeline there was still an audio blip between each 13 minute clip. It seemed to be not as objectionable, but still there. I also tried using the device explorer to edit straight out of the FS4, but the same problem was there.
I’m presently running a DV test, although this does’t solve my problem in HDV. JVC is closed today, will call them tomorrow. -

February 22, 2011 at 1:53 pmI’m wondering if the long GOP format of HDV has something to do with it and you don’t see this on DV. I specifically did not buy the Focus and went for the more expensive Sony HVR-DR60 unit because of this. Hope you get it working.

February 22, 2011 at 2:17 pmWhich format are you using on the FS-4? .M2T I assume? I have been using various firestore’s for years with my 250u’s. Never had any problems when I roll SD AVI but for some reason, I have always had problems with HDV in Vegas. Sony doesn’t like the QuickTime files, and in my case, the M2T files actually seem to be missing a video frame or two between clips when I import.
I think John may be on to something with his long GOP theory.

February 22, 2011 at 5:59 pmIf you can’t get the long takes stitched together into continuous footage before importing into Vegas, try turning off Quickfade Audio Edits on the Options menu when you import to stop Vegas inserting its own “edge smoothing” fades (default 10ms I think) between adjacent audio events. That might take care of the audio glitch between segments of otherwise continuous footage.
