Hi there – I’m new to the forum so apologies if this is old hat – but am I the only one being driven mad by the spacebar behaviour?

Yes I know about the play / pause setting – what bugs me no end is that the spacebar doesn’t work outside of the timeline screen – you have to use F12 or Ctrl + space – this is utter madness to me – I just cannot get out of the habit of hitting the spacebar – if anybody knows a way to configure it differently PLEEEEASE let me know

ps:I’ve also tried using AutoHotkey but it doesn’t work either

    best regards

You can easily go to “options” and then to “Customized keyboard”
and change and manipulate to your desire to assign any key to
    control a particular feature.

    Thanks for your response Steve

but I’m pretty sure that only works with certain keys

will try again later and come back

Yes Steve – just double checked – there is no way to make the spacebar a global start key – ctrl space and F12 both work fine – but not the spacebar (the one surely everybody wants!)

I’ve thought of a novel workaround – which is to make Alt + space another global shortcut key – and tape the keys together on the keyboard

I still can’t believe that no-one else is bothered by this – how do other people work?

    best regards

PS: I am also unable to add some other kbd shortcuts – eg: make the keypad +/- keys work like the PageUp/Down keys – the changes are accepted but just don’t work

I also get annoyed by the spacebar not working unless focus is on the timeline. It’s mostly not a problem because that’s where the focus happens to be when I hit space, but it gets me occasionally. Need to get used to Ctrl+Space.

I assume you cannot have spacebar as a global “play” shortcut because that would always prevent you typing spaces in text media, marker names etc.

Another option is the “play” media hotkey on multimedia keyboards. The extra media hotkeys do a useful assortment of things in Vegas.

Taping Alt+Space could cause problem using the Alt key for other things – plenty of keyboard shortcuts use Alt.

    Hi Matt

you got me thinking on the right lines

    I downloaded this little gem

    https://download.cnet.com/Keyboard-Remapper/3000-2094_4-10724534.html

and then just remapped the spacebar to F12

    job done – huurrrahhh

I’m curious, after doing that, what happens if you try to edit a title or hit M and try to label a marker and use the space key? I just tried doing that and just using the F12 key and it started playing the timeline and didn’t add a space. Isn’t that behavior more annoying?

    Hi David

I suppose if you do a lot of titling and text stuff you would prefer things as they are – but for me that’s a tiny fraction of my time spent on Vegas –

so for me the spacebar as a global start key is much better – I feel much less irritated now!

If you are used to using F12 then fine – but as a musician I mainly use Cubase – and always use the spacebar for start / stop – so it’s hard to break the habit

in fact the re-mapper program I mentioned can easily be turned off when you need to do text etc

actually that little program could be extremely useful for anybody wishing to improve their work environment – it also does macros and other stuff – very good

    best regards
