After I finished college, I spent the summer in NYC doing a fellowship with IRTS. I opted not to stay in New York b/c a) the cost of living is way too and b) If i took a job I wouldn’t be actually editing. Because I had a ton of really good references and a bunch of work samples I ended up getting a job In Baton Rouge, La at a post house as a full time FCP editor. I started at 30k which I felt was decent for the market I’m in. I’m making more than quite a number of my friends from the IRTS fellowship who stayed in NYC. And the cost of living in BR is not all that high. Although we do have to deal with hurricanes, hurricane evacuees, increased traffic and population due to the destruction of New Orleans. Maybe New York isn’t such a bad idea after all.

I’ve had a similar experience with the Boris generator as well as with a trial version of Boris Graffiti. It didn’t crash on me every time, but probly like every other time. If i ever went to readjust a piece of text it would just crash to desktop no warning. I seem to recall reading somewhere that this problem was caused by a corrupt or possibly a duplicate font. Try doing a search on the Forum.

We have a DaMax that we use daily to beam live edits to client via ichat. It works pretty well. Every now and then (maybe once or twice a month) it’ll lock up and you may have to cycle the power to get it back running again. Before We had Our uncompressed system, which we also purchased from ProMax, we used this DaMax to digitize from a beta deck for FCP. We never really had a problem with it. Also their support folks were always friendly and responded quickly. The only problem I’ve ever had with them is when they sent us the wrong RAM, twice, in one week, but they were very quick to fix the problem, and we had the proper ram with in a few days of the first mistake.

Keep your SFX in mp3. I’m assuming you don’t need to ever use all of them in one project. So keep it portable and if the mac has FCP it’s got quicktime as well, open the one’s you want in QT and export them as waves or another format. It takes all of 10 sec. I’m sure your workflow can handle that.

May 20, 2005 at 9:35 pm in reply to: No direct export of MPEG2 from FCP5?? A feature, not a defect.I’ve found that exporting Quicktime goes much faster than the compressor, so i ususally do it that way. That sucks that they took out the feature.
