As a consumer I thought it was a nice WWDC keynote. Grouped notifications in iOS 12, the Siri Shortcuts, the safe browsing in safari, and the sidebar in the Finder with some editing options and mark-up options all seemed small but welcome additions.
I liked it all better than last year, to be honest.
And even if I don’t like Animoji, I *do* think Memoji looked very impressive and beautifully drawn. APFS for Fusion Drives will be welcome for my iMac. No upgrade on iCloud Free Storage though, boo. And even if Siri Shortcuts could make Siri a lot smarter a lot quicker, it also doesn’t make Siri smarter, it’s more of a workaround. As a professional it seemed nice that Apple was talking about eGPUs, the dark mode, and again the very welcome additions to Finder.
There are also some worrying things. Mojave becomes the last OS to support 32 bit apps. Even Compressor is still 32bits.
The whole Metal/Open CL/GL thing is also a bit ‘scary’. Because it heightens Apple’s walled garden and I don’t know yet if that will give Metal a push, or will have the opposite effect on 3rd party developers.https://mathieughekiere.wordpress.com

Agreed, 100 percent.
Yes of course I have a wish list of stuff I wish FCPX had, but the pro’s far outweigh the cons for me.
I’m so used to it now that I can’t imagine myself going back to tracks. I talked to professionals a couple of years ago, and I told them that the beauty of the Roles concept was that it was based on CONTENT instead of a numbering system. You assigned DIALOGUE, SOUND, MUSIC, and then you had the beauty of organization (which is the nr 1 point of tracks) but with all the benefits of the magnetic timeline.
I still think this is a beautiful concept from which I think “why didn’t anyone think about that earlier?”
With 10.3, Apple supercharged it with the audio lanes and coloring, finally exploiting the potential they had with the introduction of Roles. And of course I’m sure more potential is left to the table untapped (audio mixer, automatic ducking like Premiere Pro now announced, etc. …)My first reaction to FCPX was mostly frustration and rejection, but by 10.0.6 (2012) I had switched completely. Now my muscle memory *thinks* in terms of connected storylines, primary storyline etc. …
Anyone may disagree, and I know it sounds simplistic, but every time I see demos of Premiere and Resolve, and I cannot feel like the way their timeline works, feels backwards and old.And I know a lot of people will say they don’t care, and that’s fine, but to this day I’m so curious to hear what Walter Murch would say about FCPX AFTER 10.3. I just read his great book, In the Blink of an Eye. He’s a very gifted speaker and I know he went to Premiere Pro and I’m sure he’s happy. I know he dissed FCPX for very valid reasons when it was released, but a lot of those reasons he mentioned before became invalid with Roles and later 10.3 and Audio Lanes. For someone who talked so much both philosophically and technically about editing (and has great insights), I’m very interested in hearing what he would think about the Magnetic Timeline in it’s post 10.3 form.

In Belgium, somewhere in March 2014 I think, (long before 10.3, which would have made even more impression) I gave a demo of FCPX to a group of industry professionals and even some ex-teachers from school.
They recognised me and told me before the event: “We’re just here to see the stuff about the new Mac Pro. You can try and convince us about FCPX, but we hate it, we tried it, we hate it.” I just smiled, not a lot you can say to that.I did a demo of FCPX, and afterwards they asked me all kinds of specifics about the program. A year later (because in education they had to get every budget thing approved etc), they asked me to give them a 3-evening workshop to teach them FCPX, which they completely switched to.
So yeah. A lot of people only know the program from inception and never gave it another look. It was a disastrous launch by Apple.
But people who see the program in action by someone who really knows it, and takes a couple of hours to show them correctly, instead of them trying it and just being confused and frustrated, does make a world of difference.https://mathieughekiere.wordpress.com

Not that it’s an excuse, but I think it’s low on Apple’s priorities for the moment, because FCPX renders much faster than competing software with the built-in hardware. We all guess this is because Apple can finetune their software for their hardware and the other way around.
I hear a lot of people complaining about the performance in DaVinci in comparison with FCPX, so I can imagine the need for them is bigger.
And maybe because they already support more graphics cards because they also are on Windows and Linux.
It would be interesting to do a comparison of Resolve with eGPU vs FCPX without eGPU.That being said, I would guess that Apple didn’t built in eGPU support without any plans of their own software supporting it. I guess we’ll see it in the future.

The release notes talked about the noise reduction, I copied that text from the release notes. I didn’t find the effect back in the effects panel and apparently it’s taken out of the release notes too. Maybe just a matter of timing, with all the Prores RAW, that they add such an effect.

That automatic ducking of audio- feature looks great. I’ve sent Apple feedback asking about something like this a couple of times already.
As a first go for some basic stuff, this could save a lot of time.https://mathieughekiere.wordpress.com

Very interesting. I hope the series appears on Netflix in other countries as well.

As someone who has never seen Next computers before, but read about them in the biography of Steve Jobs etc (as a reference, I’m 30 now), I I find the design striking! What a monolithic beast!

A bit rough to read: “”additional equipment was used for final rendering of 3D content” if you are selling a 15.000 euro computer. But maybe that’s incorrect expectations from me, as someone who’s not home in the whole 3D world.

I bought and watched it.
It was good, but not special or great. It had some nice quotes. The part I thought was the most interesting was a piece of the interview with a User Interface Designer that worked for Apple from 2009-2011, where he talked about the visual feedback they designed so you could SEE (and ‘feel’) how the magnetic timeline worked when you changed a clip.
I think the documentary could be a bit longer and maybe spend less time to the reactions and more interviews with people working on it and hear about their difficulties in re-thinking the editing paradigm and the discussions they must have had. There is some stuff like that in it (like mentioned), but not enough in my opinion. I understand it’s difficult to get a hold of those people because Apple doesn’t want people talking too much about the behind-the-scenes stuff.
Anyhow. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t super deep either.
