March 19, 2018 at 8:50 pmAs someone who has never seen Next computers before, but read about them in the biography of Steve Jobs etc (as a reference, I’m 30 now), I I find the design striking! What a monolithic beast!

March 19, 2018 at 9:25 pmGlad you liked it. I stumbled across that site today. It’s one of the few places I’ve found that offers such a detailed and high-quality look at these systems.

March 20, 2018 at 4:04 pmIn the late 80s and early 90s I was producer and on-air reviewer of computer hardware and software on a show called PCTV Live!. I was lucky enough to be sent a demo of the NeXT – I can’t remember whether it was the NeXT workstation or the NeXTcube, but it was a wondrous piece of hardware, especially given the technology at the time. The graphical user interface was what really blew us away! If you want to have a look at screenshots and product brochures from the time, here’s a good link:

March 21, 2018 at 12:25 pmI love the screen shots. It’s like listening to the Beatles. Not much has changed from then till now as far as the look of the system.

March 22, 2018 at 8:21 pmAllegheny College in Meadville, PA had a large NeXT installation. I remember using these machines to do my first-time-ever web browsing! They had a computer lab full of them, and faculty offices had them too, with the matching laser printers. This was in the late 90s.
At home, we had our Mac IIsi with SEVENTEEN megabytes of RAM. My wife and I had purchased that RAM upgrade from the OSU bookstore (when she was in grad school), and I remember getting a nit-picky phone call after I placed the order. Didn’t I know that only 16 bit applications could use that much RAM? And what did I want all that RAM for???? ☺
Anyway, here’s to the next Mac Pro. Some day.

March 26, 2018 at 1:38 amI had a friend who owned several of these. They were gorgeous and a joy to use. The performance was far superior to they typical Mac or PC most people were using at the time, despite the fact the internal hardware was rather ordinary.
The OS was really well designed, stable and efficient.
