The DV codec was made for continuous tone video image and doesn’t handle sharp contrasty edges very well. As you discovered, Animation is lossless so will look good, but file size/cpu playback requirements are quite high. You might try PhotoJPEG at 60% or 75%, I have found it to be an excellent combination of quality and file size.

I just cut a commerical in FCP using DVCPROHD from a Varicam, and added titles in Motion, worked just great.

You can use the Primatte keyer that ships with Motion, but I highly recommend dvMatte blast from DVGarage:

Try putting the object to go in the backside in it’s own layer and drop the layer in the well. You may need to put the mask on the layer instead of the object. I’ve been working a lot with that filter and I have to say I don’t like it very much – makes text quite fuzzy and it’s very fussy overall.

If you are importing the Motion project file into DVDSP it will read the whole project, irrespective of the play range. You can adjust what gets played in the Inspector in DVDSP, or you can change your project duration in Motion. As to your question about quality, how are you viewing final output? In FCP? On an NTSC monitor?

Try adding your effects to the layer the text is contained in rather than the text object itself. Also, try setting the layer to fixed resolution.

Try adding it to the project first by dragging it into the Layers tab of the inspector. Then drag it to the well, or better yet, just drag it on top of the mask object in the Layers tab.
