You have two choices that come with FCP for free.

Both are audio filters accessible via the “Effects” tab. >>> Go to “Effects”. >>> Audio filters. Then, either Apple OR FCP. For Apple you want: “AU dynamics processor”. Experiment with the setting. For FCP you want: “Compressor/Limiter”.

Keep in mind that if your audio track sounds “distant”, just bringing up the volume will NOT change that. It will just be a LOUD bad track. Some EQ can help, but there’s no fixing an “off-camera” mic.

Good luck. (Hint: EQ BEFORE compressing. You’ll get better results)

[Joseph Rivera] “how exactly do i go about fixing this???”

You don’t! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you’re hosed!

This is NOT an FCP issue. It’s a workflow issue. Change the filenames and as you’ve discovered, you can’t reconnect. I’d kick this back to your editor and let him figure it out.

    Ah. You didn’t mention that!

Shoot 16 x 9 “protect” for 4 x 3. Do a “center cut” down conversion. Aspect ratio conversion can be a world of hurt… especially for GRFX.

You’ve got a learning curve ahead of you. Start experimenting NOW! Close your browser, get off the internet and start experimenting with doing the conversion and what it does to your GRFX.

There is NO EASY WAY to do this. Aspect ratio conversions are always a compromise somewhere.

    Good luck.

Stay in HD until output. Use a Kona 3 card to “downconvert” on output to SD digibeta. That way, you
have a full rez HD sequence and master file, in the event you ever need an HD version. If you down convert before output, you lose that option.

  • You’re probably listening to rendered audio files, and yes, your media is toast.

It’s easy to confirm this. You simply navigate to where your media is located (on the finder level… not in FCP), and look to see if your media is there. If yes, reconnect. If no, re import/digitize. You did save a back up copy, right?

    Matt,

You need more help that what you’re going to get here on the Cow. Specifically, you should hire
someone (Like SHANE!) who understands this process and knows all of the ways that this can go horribly wrong.

Judging by your initial question, you’re over your head on this, and if you try to do it yourself… it’s NOT going to end well.

In a BEST cast scenario, this is going to be a complicated, frustrating, difficult process. In other words, “You can’t get there from here”. My advice is to pay someone else to guide you through it.

Good luck. (You’re going to need it!)

    Forget the chair… try standing!

Seriously. There are some great “edit desks” that raise from sitting to standing level with the touch of a button. When your back starts hurting, kick back the chair and stand up. It’ll do wonders for your back.

August 15, 2010 at 3:31 pm in reply to: SDI cables

Over a short run (less than 20 feet) you will probably NOT notice a difference. Over a longer run,
the HD-SDI cable will have less signal attenuation, and therefore be the correct choice.

There is of course a price difference, with the SDI cable costing more.

Unless you know how to analyze a signal on a scope, you’ll never see the difference.

    [Robert Douglas] “Constructive comments appreciated”

First of all, is this the first time you’ve conformed an off-line to on-line project?

Judging by your questions, I’ll assume it is.

Second. You’re hosed! If you’d done this before you’d know that.

GRFX do NOT make this transition well. You’re mixing SD and HD, anamorphic and straight, pixels and that is a recipe for disaster. As you’ve discovered, this is NOT a “one click” solution.

If you use “Off-line RT HD” as your off-line codec, at least the pixel ratio will match, but there’s no guarantee that your creative decisions at that resolution will make sense in HD. You’re gonna have to
fix this element by element, event by event.

Next time, do a round trip test to see what your results will be before you have to deal with it.
