Offline Titles don’t match in the Online
Hello All,
Here is the problem: Feature short was edited offline with timeline settings at 720×480 NTSC DV (3;2) aspect ratio, pixel aspect ration is NTSC anamorphic 16×9 H.264. Online is 1920×1080, aspect ratio HD TV 16×9, pixel aspect square pro res HQ. Titles created in FCP offline have the same font settings as online yet seem off font weight, tracking, and density. I have taken the offline and placed it on a higher video track as a guide.
Any one know of how to handle the matching of offline and online titles? Constructive comments appreciated. -

Does the online machine have the exact same font(s) installed as the offline? An annoying characteristic in FCP is it will just substitute a font if the correct font is missing without asking or warning in case you might want to stop and load the missing font. Wouldn’t that be a useful warning!
It is possible that a non bold version of the font is being substituted.

The font control in the viewer indicates the the font set is identical. The offline was done in Germany, but the offline project file indicates the same fonts are being used. If FCP is substituting fonts does it show the substituted font name or does it use the original font name while substituting the font?

It shows the substituted font. Although the font names might match, it is still not a certainty that they are identical.
The other thing to check is that the guide video has its distort attributes set correctly, otherwise the titles will not match perfectly.

First of all, is this the first time you’ve conformed an off-line to on-line project?
Judging by your questions, I’ll assume it is.
Second. You’re hosed! If you’d done this before you’d know that.
GRFX do NOT make this transition well. You’re mixing SD and HD, anamorphic and straight, pixels and that is a recipe for disaster. As you’ve discovered, this is NOT a “one click” solution.
If you use “Off-line RT HD” as your off-line codec, at least the pixel ratio will match, but there’s no guarantee that your creative decisions at that resolution will make sense in HD. You’re gonna have to
fix this element by element, event by event.Next time, do a round trip test to see what your results will be before you have to deal with it.

Thanks for the constructive opinions. I just was curious if Final Cut can handle the SD to HD titles easily in the circumstances for this particular film. I can match the titles spot on in Photoshop or After Effects so I am not hosed, just a little more work needed to finish.
