I’ve been in the equipment rental (hire) business for a long time. Started out with a 3/4″ linear tape system. Migrated to Avids. Switched to FCP. I’m sure I’ll be using something else further on down the line. My point is, equipment changes. That’s why people RENT now isn’t it!
This is neither a good thing or a bad thing… it’s just the way it is.
Part of the fun of this business is facing these choices and hopefully making the right business decision.

Lockit boxes are GREAT…. if the operators know what they’re doing.
In my experience, these kinds of offsets are NOT due to something that happens in post. It’s usually some kind of incompatible setting, despite what the audio guy says. (Usually happens after lunch when everyone resets for the afternoon)
If the shoot is on going, make a field trip to the set and follow the signal path from TC generator, to audio multitrack to cameras. Everything has to be spot on for this workflow to be automatic. One incorrect setting and you’re back to manually matching everything up.
Make them PROVE to you that their settings, cabling, and references are correct. (Better to be a dick than to spend YOUR time fixing their problems).
I’ve begun to demand that the tech super on set email me an iphone pict of the settings panel on the camera, decks, and TC generator BEFORE they start shooting. You’d be surprised how many mistakes we catch this way.

WRONG! If you DON’T make one, he’ll definitely need one. Do yourself a favor and plan on creating a 59.94 master NOW! There are plenty of reasons why you WILL need it.
Did you consider? Promo clips for broadcast. (I can guarantee you that they’ll want 59.94). I can think of a dozen other reasons… but that’s YOUR job, not mine.

“10 bit uncompressed is a pretty heavy load for most computers and drives. Chances are, the drive on your PC is not capable of the speed needed to play back this file. Maybe your PC is also too old and slow to do it as well. Finally, make sure that you have the proper, updated software on your PC to play this back. Has that computer EVER worked playing back a quicktime? Is it only 10 bit that craps out? If other flavors work, then it most definitely is a bandwidth issue. If NOTHING works, then it’s probably a software/settings issue.

Franchise scam… bad. Education… good!
I think Mr. Zelin may be a bit harsh on the “tech schools” and the kind of students they turn out. My personal experience with graduates from a famous institution in Mr. Zelin’s backyard has been VERY POSITIVE! We have had good luck with more than a few of those graduates.
Is it too expensive? That depends on where you go with your career. If you’re NOT focused, driven, and dedicated to succeeding in this business then you will fail. But… if you are, then in my opinion, self education is money well spent.

Some times a generous tip to the curbside skycap will circumvent a “Checked Baggage” fee. Doesn’t always work, so be prepared to pony up, but if you play it right, you may just skate by.

Agree with Michael.
The trick is to EQ before you start noise reduction. Try to find the frequency band that MOSTLY eliminates the unwanted sound, THEN apply the noise reduction. SOUND TRK PRO’s stuff works pretty well, but go easy on it. In this case, less is more. You’re never going to get rid of the bugs completely, but at least you can minimize their impact.
Applying the compressor limiter can help too since it will drop most of the Non dialogue sound.
If you have the budget, take the tracks to an audio post house and let them do their magic. Successful noise reduction comes from approaching the problem many different ways in the proper order. Rough EQ. Compressing/noise gate. And never underestimate plain old manual track editing to cut OUT the worst of it.
