  • Offline media files playing in timeline, but no where to be found on harddrive

    Hi,

I recently backed up an FCP project onto a new drive and in the process, might have deleted important media files. I say might have, because when I open the project ALL of the media is offline, yet, when I play back the project I can see most of the media. In fact, I can hear all of the audio, but the matching video from the interviews is offline.

What does this mean? Where has my media gone? I have tried to located it manually, as well as through the search function, but I can find it neither on my hard drive, nor on the external I copied it to.

I have had similar problems in the past when I have copied projects, but I have never lost all of the media, only to be able to see offline media in the timeline.

I have also searched through the trash and even tried restoring deleted files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You’re probably listening to rendered audio files, and yes, your media is toast.

It’s easy to confirm this. You simply navigate to where your media is located (on the finder level… not in FCP), and look to see if your media is there. If yes, reconnect. If no, re import/digitize. You did save a back up copy, right?
