You’re correct that the switch over to digital inputs drastically reduced the need for those large multichannel mixers (Mackie 1604) that were standard on every AVID I ever used.
When we switched to FCP over two years ago, we recognized that we’d no longer need such an elaborate mixer. Instead we bough very inexpensive Behringer’s (10ch) and made it clear to our editors that these are NOT mixers… they’re VOLUME CONTROL KNOBS! To answer your question, that’s basically all they do! Actual level changes now are all done in the time line, and outputs are all digiatl as well, but it’s nice to be able to easily select to monitor the CPU or a deck without having to click all over the place. Besides, these tiny mixers are less than $200 bucks. So , go ahead and splurge, you’ll be glad you did.Mark

Your digitizing is probably breaking up because of gaps in the timecode. When FCP encounters tc breaks, it will either a) create a new clip or b) ignore it and plow on. You can set this preference in the digitze settings. Be aware that if you set it to ignore TC breaks, you will NOT have a valid TC reference after that first break. This may not be an issue for you if you’re never going to up rez, but having accurate TC is critical for most workflows.
If your original tape has a break in the control track (shows up as snow or the “blue screen” generated by your deck) then no matter what you do, FCP will “increment” the clips. So, the solution is part what you do in the field and part how you choose your log and capture settings.

When in log & Capture mode, go to the “Clip Settings” tab. You’ll see a pull down menu for “input channels”. That should be on 2ch not 12!.
Once you’ve corrected this, you can save this setting so that you never have to fix it again.Mark

I couldn’t agree with you more! However, everyone has a different workflow and need. For example, we use the classic “off-line” to “on-line” approach where we KNOW we’re going to go into a final mix with a “licensed audio professional” driving the bus. So…. you can bet that the 75+ off-line systems that we run wiill not feature audiophile quality components. In this scenario, “decent” audio is sufficient. We know we’re gonna fix it later. (By the way, we use the tapco S-5’s. For those that don’t know, that’s Mackie’s “low end” powered speakers)

Stacking tracks rather than cutting on a single track is fine, but here’s where it can haunt you.
If you’re consolidating media, or “up-rezzing” your sequence, having multiple “unused” layers will just mean that your redigitizing more material than you’ll ever use. This isn’t a bad thing… it just takes up more space and more time to accomplish. On the other hand, you will have more ability to change things in the on-line if that’s necessary.
So, if you want to “create” this way, fine. I’d suggest that you collapse all tracks before you move to a higher resolution.

Macs will work on a unity server, however, you need to have the Avid Unity software installed… which means essentially buying an Avid seat just to get access. Check out the avid website for more details.

They’re only $180 bucks and they might just be exactly what you’re looking for. Best feature: optical input. One of the weakspots on the g-5 is the tiny 1/8th inch phono plug for analogue audio out. These speakers can take the the built in fibre out of the g-5, leaving you an extra input for a deck or something. With this set up, you may NOT need a mixer for simple work. They’re worth a look. I’m not suggesting these can compete with the Genelec’s or Tannoy’s… but if your on a budget they are a good choice.

A good place to start is the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters). They have a bookstore on their website that lists thousands of books that will answer any and all questions you may have about Television Broadcasting. The list goes from extremely technical to very basic. If you can’t find it here, it doesn’t exist.

Try looking at the Avid website and searching for “Unity” and “Isis” and “LANshare”. These are their primary “shared storage” products.
For only a 3 seat system, you’re probably looking at LAN share.Pitfalls? Price!

If the cost is a problem, then don’t attempt a workflow that crosses NLE platforms. It’s that simple.
