This sounds like a bug to me. If this is what is happening, why did Apple change this in the first place? They had to know this would cause some problems. Everyone here has had to change (re-edit) an older program at some time.

I’ll second this one….
I went thru this same issue last year with our first feature film. When it got down to the audio pass, FCP started crashing (128 meg project file). After looking here on the COW and listening to Shane… I cut my project down into smaller chunks and WOW what a difference it made.
[Julian Clarke] “Its a little late for me to try it out now, since I FCP won’t cooperate with copying stuff out of the project file. But I’ll give it a go when I start my next one.
“Its never too late. If you have to, take the media offline (disconnect your media drives) and load the project. Then… all you have to do is copy and paste. Trust me…. its never too late to save yourself headaches.

How are your export and compression times?
Mine were terrible. I have to export the entire program to a Quicktime, then I can make my DVD from that in a reasonable amount of time.

“Yes… I did notice this.
I will respond by saying that it is best to export and use compressor to compress your DVD for you. OR….. This is what I started doing… I only need to export a program (one program) and put it on DVD. So, to save time, I started using DVDSP to compress my Quicktimes Single Pass 7.0 mb/s. So far, the images are incredible and fast on my Mac Pro.

I would have to suspect the power source. If its as old as you say… your UPS may be going out. Do you have any software or LEDs on the front of your UPS? It may be weakening. This does happen.

Let me ask you this…
Are you running the latest software on your G5, like MacOS 10.4.10, FCS2 6.01, Quicktime 7.2, etc.?
If so, I’m starting to see a pattern develop. We have a G5 running all of this and I can tell you that it is very slow with rendering in FCP and in Compressor. The G5 is a dual 2.7 with 4 gig of RAM. My MacPro Quad 3.0 runs almost five times faster in ANY software compared to the G5. But a year ago, the G5 and the Mac Pro were almost neck and neck when it came to any type of rendering.

Well, this issue and others like have existed since last September… So…. I’m holding out hope that these issues should be fixed soon.

I can reproduce it for them all day, if they’d like. I have run into this issue on our G5 and Mac Pro, so I know without a doubt that its a bug.

That is field reversal. The fields on your DVD are opposite of what they should be. Meaning…. it sounds like you had D1 (720×486 lower field) converted to DVD (640×480 upper field).
Can you tell us what format your edit was done? Is it DV, DVCPro, DVCPro50, what?
