  • Is my G5 Quad going bad?

Posted by Chris Borjis on September 24, 2007 at 6:20 pm

I’ve had this happen 3 times now in the last 6 months.

The second time was last week.

The third time was just now.

I’ll be working in final cut or after effects and my G5 monitor goes blank, the G5 internal red led turns on and the only thing I can do is turn it off and back on again.

Is this a tell tale sign that I may need a replacement soon?
thankfully I renewed my apple care warranty.

How much power is being drawn on the circuit the computer is on? Do you have an adequate UPS hooked up to the computer?

We had an issue with our G5 Quad whereby the Dell 24″ monitor would blink and sometimes shut off. Turned out the UPS was just barely too small to drive everything connected to it so the editor turned on the Mackie audio board, the Dell was affected. We put in a larger UPS and all is well now.

It is hard to say, I would sign up for an appointment at the Genius bar at your closest Apple Store and have them take a look at it.

Its possible that your power supply is heading south. They tend to head that way long before curcuit boards and soild state components start heading to the boneyard.

Run the memory test in the Techtool Deluxe.

We have major overkill on the power, its a heavy duty
ups with redundant batteries plugged into 220V conditioned power.

The G5 replaced our SGI Octane (smoke*) and that thing drew way more power.

Yeah I think its the power supply too.

I’ve heard a lot of the G5 Quads had bad power supplies right out of the box but ours ran for so long without issue.

    Thanks fellas 🙂

I would have to suspect the power source. If its as old as you say… your UPS may be going out. Do you have any software or LEDs on the front of your UPS? It may be weakening. This does happen.

Interesting, its now done it again, but the system is still on.

the monitor went into sleep mode like the video signal went off, and I moved the mouse and it woke back up, but the red led is still on.

The sleep mode for the computer is disabled so I don’t know why it would do that.

Which LED is on? Several of the diagnostic LEDs on the Late 2005 G5s are red.

See this KB for more information: https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302527

If you list which LED it is, I can look up a somewhat more detailed description (compared to the KB) of what the problem is when I get home.

I’ll pay closer attention the next time it happens.

this is an early 2006 G5 Quad with PCI-E. (it was purchased right after PCI-E models were released)
