  • 12 hours to burn a 16 minute Best Quality DVD???

This is insane- it took 12 hours to encode the mpeg-2 for a Best Quality (90 minute) SD DVD of my 16 minute short film.

That is insane. Is there something up with my G5 or should I always expect such insane times when I choose Best Quality? I’d be happy to hear from anybody with experience.

Something is definitely wrong with your setup. Takes me just under an hour to compress a 22 minute 720p project for DVD. In fact we create Blu Ray files in under 2 hours with Compressor.

Not sure where to start, but something is definitely wrong in your setup.

    Samah,

Maybe if you tell us what steps you’re taking we might be able to help you. Your post says “burn,” but then it says “Best Quality,” so it actually sounds like you’re encoding in Compressor, not burning. If So, how are you getting your material to Compressor? In the past I know I’ve suggested that you first output a self contained QT (from a fully rendered timeline), are you doing that?

Umm… Yeah I meant encode, not burn, my bad. I have done what you suggested before, and actually I just did that now. I’m encoding it on my MacBook Pro now, and it’s going MUCH faster than my G5… The thing is David, I know it goes faster with the self-contained QT file, but still, 12 hours? I think I’m just following a normal work flow- exporting to Compressor, and then apply the settings in question… and then I click submit.. don’t know what the issue could be, but I think i’m going to stick with my MacBook Pro for encoding from now on…

It doesn’t need to be a self-contained movie, just a Reference movie will work equally well. The main thing is not to do the “Send to Compressor” as that is definitely slower.

Is everything in your timeline rendered before you Send to Compressor?

Thanks for the feedback Walter… Everything is fully rendered before I send it to Compressor. I don’t know it’s very strange…

    Let me ask you this…

Are you running the latest software on your G5, like MacOS 10.4.10, FCS2 6.01, Quicktime 7.2, etc.?

If so, I’m starting to see a pattern develop. We have a G5 running all of this and I can tell you that it is very slow with rendering in FCP and in Compressor. The G5 is a dual 2.7 with 4 gig of RAM. My MacPro Quad 3.0 runs almost five times faster in ANY software compared to the G5. But a year ago, the G5 and the Mac Pro were almost neck and neck when it came to any type of rendering.

I am running the latest versions of all the software you listed.

I think you are right! I really have the feeling these newer versions are not really made with the last generation of Macs made…

    Thanks for your reply.

I have an 8 core, running latest OSX, QT, and FCP. Suddenly compression is taking a lifetime, and in many cases freezing completely. I too had a 16 min clip that took over 7 hours and that’s on Fast Quality. This was a Self Contained File outside of FCP. I took the same clip into DVD SP and it compressed it in 10 mins. It did a 45 min sequence in 30 mins.

Is there any fix for this in sight? Normally I don’t update anything for months, but this seduced me now my work is made of stone…
