  • Dude…

There’s your problem. You can ONLY have 2 gig, 4 gig, 8 gig or 16 gig on an Octocore machine using FCP. This is per Apple’s instruction and has been proven many times over by almost everyone out here.

Your memory must also be in matched pairs equally across the risers in order. Since you said you have 10 gig that would mean that you have four slots with 1 gig bars of RAM and four slots with 2 gig bars of RAM. This is a real issue when dealing with performance of FCP. You would be much better to remove the four 1 gig bars and just use the 2 gig bars in your system and watch your performance sky rocket in FCP.

Give this a shot and see….

[Tom Matthies] “It reminds me of when I worked an an engineer in a large TV production truck. We would check our signal constantly on it’s way to the satellite. When we got a report that something didn’t look right on the other end, we would recheck things on our end again but our response, more often than not, was “The picture looked good when it left the truck.” It’s kind of the same situation. “

This is the quandary we all deal with everyday. I’ve had this sort of issue happen so many times, it’s not even funny anymore. I have come to the conclusion that you cannot please everyone all of the time, and sometimes, not even some of the time.

All you can do is the best quality that you can output with the best equipment that you can afford. If we had budgets like Pixar, our Blu-Ray discs would be pristine, too.

Oh…. One more thing… Has anyone used Adobe Encore for Blu-Ray encoding?

I’ve thought of doing this but what if you need to go back along ways into your project for some strange reason… I’ve had to do this before because of corrupt media.

Actually… I did think about that and I have backed up all of my old projects and paired the Autosave folder down to just a few projects.

The very best option when working with XDCAM EX footage is to backup ALL of the card files to Blu-Ray discs in its entirety. Then you can use FCP to convert the footage to Quicktime to a hard drive for editing. After that, place those incredibly important Blu-Ray discs in a safe place.

January 7, 2009 at 2:54 pm in reply to: FCP with an 8-core….configure?

I’m afraid that you’ll have to look at each memory bar individually to see if they are from the same manufacturer and if its ECC or non-ECC.

But from what you said after you downgraded to 10.5.5, it sounds like your system is running fine. I hate to say it, but 10.5.5 and FCP 6.05 are sluggish and are prone to crash alot. I’m pretty frustrated with this myself lately but I’m trudging through it.

One more question, Do you have RT effects in FCP? I say this because if your memory isn’t correct, RT effects will not work at all.

Let me know what you find out.

January 5, 2009 at 12:02 am in reply to: FCP with an 8-core….configure?

Well, I see a couple things here, Karl.

One… You said that you got your computer from a VAR. I would have to question whether all of the RAM is from the same manuafacturer and it is all of the same specs – you can’t mix ECC memory with Non-ECC.

Second… You said that you are running 10.5.6. VERY BAD. I was told by AJA and Facilis that we needed to stay away from 10.5.6 as their software will not run properly with it and it has multiple issues with memory leaks.

[Karl Hirsch] “Wayne, you said something about pulling RAM. Do you think that might apply here?”

You could if you want. I would inspect all of your RAM to make sure that all of it has the same specs. Then if you want to try pulling 8 gig to give you a total of 8 gig, that would be a good thing to try. Remember, for a 8-core system, you need at least 8 gigs in symmetrical order across the two memory risers.

December 31, 2008 at 2:28 pm in reply to: Client issue with DVD

    I agree with Walter completely…

I’m not sure about BitVice but I have heard lots of good things about it here.

BUT with your issue… The problem will always be the fact that you are taking an HD video downconverting it to SD then playing it back onto an HD monitor. You will NEVER get a perfectly clean picture that way. All LCDs or Plamsa monitors will playback SD differently. One manufacturer might look pretty good, another might look crappy.

Case in point, we have Panasonic BT-LH2600W for our production monitors. SD video looks really crappy on them. I also have a Sharp Aquos monitor for trade shows – its looks OK on it – better than the Panasonic montior.

The best an ONLY real solution is to output to Blu-Ray and play from that. Its much better to stay HD, then to do all of these conversions. If your client isn’t willing to do that, ask them why did they purchase a beautiful HD monitor to playback SD video (that’s overkill). Blu-Ray is getting rather inexpensive these days for players.

    That’s my rant…

    Thanks, Walter.

But, no, I have not upgraded to 10.5.6 yet. To many large projects going on for that.
