With regards to RAM, what MacPro do you have?
Is it the Quad core or Octo core? I ask because the Quad core really needs at least 4 gig of RAM to perform at its maximum potential and the Octo core needs at least 8 gig for max performance. This is according to Apple and all of us who have these specs. Its true!

Now, Chris…. Why would Apple want to make something for everyone to use?
Its more profitable to make components that ONLY work on one product so you have to purchase more stuff at over-inflated prices… Just because the economy took a huge dump doesn’t mean that you can’t gouge your customers on cool stuff.
Sometimes companies like Apple design things with profits in mind, not common sense.

Hmmmm….. I have to agree with you. BUT… I would suggest that you get with your VAR and talk to them about this. It could have been avoided and wouldn’t have cost you anything.
By the way, the issue is the connector where the battery meets the bottom pin connection. Its made of cheap plastic and will break apart. Ours did this only a couple months into having the camera so warranty did cover this issue. BUT we did have to go round and round with Sony until we got someone to admit there was a problem with this connector.

You can drop on a Notch filter and set it to somewhere around 60Hz. This should take out most of it.

It sounds like it might be a little of both.
But before going too far. I would first blow the prefs and see if FCP recognizes the codec after this. I’ve seen this happen before.

That’s what I thought too… but after looking at the files, the AppleHDVCodec.component is dated April 20, 2007, which doesn’t sound right but that’s what its showing on my computer. But I was under the impression from Sony that this isn’t HDV at all now, that its part of the updated AppleMPEG2Codec.component (dated July 2, 2007) since HDV isn’t at all 422 but 420. I may be wrong… but I thought Sony told me this.

Now, this I have seen happen after a point update. Sometimes this can happen and reinstalling the Sony software is the fix.

Have installed the 2.8 version of the Sony Transfer program?
If not, install it and it will be there… If you have installed it, install it again.

What was the footage recording using?
Sony camcorders have this nasty little default setting in the timecode menu. Its set to AUTO. This is a mistake and will cause the exact errors you speak of. The fix is to machine dub the tape to new timecode (setup properly), and then change your cameras to either DF or NDF, not that nasty little AUTO setting.

Here’s another one for you…
Sony has an ad that I saw recently saying that Outdoor Channel has a new house format: XDCAM HD.
That’s funny… we’ve been using it for the past two years and they still do not accept XDCAM or XDCAM HD as an airing format. AND…. the shows that use it are not owned by the Outdoor Channel except for our show that we produce for them.
The ad makes it seem like the show “Spear Gun Hunter” and a new program called “Savage Wild” is owned by the Outdoor Channel. As far as I know, they are not. BUT the show we produce for them is mostly shot on XDCAM HD.
Funny how things work with marketing people…

Your IT guys are correct.
Your best bet is to upgrade your storage or clean off some space for editing. Sounds to me that you have some data that would be better off on some external drives.

But I do have one question. Why the Mac Pro RAID card?
f you want to edit with internal drives, you can stripe them the the disc utility and edit any way you want. You might have trouble with HD uncompressed but I haven’t seen any issues with it.
All of you other specs look great. The Drobo would be an excellent option for RAID backup and/or small edit jobs as long as they don’t use Uncompressed video.
