OT: Built-in obsolescense
Posted by Chris Poisson on December 12, 2008 at 3:24 pmYesterday, we went to the Apple store at lunch to drool over the new 24″ LED, made specifically with MacBook Pro owners in mind. Err, make that FUTURE MBP owners. Apple could easily have put a DVI input somewhere on the back, but no, we owners of MacBook Pros of the immediate last generation are once again denied by Apple’s unquenchable greed. My only consolation is the appropriately inflated price, which I can’t afford right now. Thanks again, Steve.
There, it’s Friday, and you haven’t heard a rant from me in some time now, so I feel better.
Have a wonderful day.

December 12, 2008 at 4:35 pmNow, Chris…. Why would Apple want to make something for everyone to use?
Its more profitable to make components that ONLY work on one product so you have to purchase more stuff at over-inflated prices… Just because the economy took a huge dump doesn’t mean that you can’t gouge your customers on cool stuff.
Sometimes companies like Apple design things with profits in mind, not common sense.

Sadly, yes, exactly the point of my rant.
Have a wonderful day.

December 12, 2008 at 5:06 pmIt does seem an extraordinarily stupid idea, release a new display that only a very few Mac owners can actually use.

December 12, 2008 at 5:17 pmDIdn’t they say that every NEW mac that comes out will now have this display port functionality, including desktops? I am not defeinding the decsion, you are right they could have easily put a DVi connection on it (as matter of fact, I wish they’d put a straight DVI port on all their monitors for extension purposes, the rats nest of cables is just another point of mystery when you can’t figure out why the Apple monitor won’t extend 25′).
But display port as a technology has a lot more going for it than DVI in terms of capable max resolution. For those shooting 2K and beyond, this is where it gets interesting.
They should offer both, but they won’t.

Here are the connections on the HP DreamColor LP2480zx : DisplayPort 1.1, HDMI 1.3, (2) DVI-I, VGA, component, S-video, and composite inputs. I’m running an HP monitor on my Mac as we speak. DVI for now…but only until my new MacBook. 😉
That said, Apple has always been good about providing adapters. That DVI-VGA adapter has saved my life with projectors on the road a TON of times. Even though I’m no longer a road warrior (HALLELUJAH!!), I still have 3 or 4 of ’em rolling around.
Here are some mini-DisplayPort adapters in the Apple Store: from $29 for the regular DVI to $99 for Dual Link.
I probably have a more sinister outlook on the world than any of you, but I’m also a pocket-protector carrying nerd. (Don’t want those DVI-VGA adapters messing up my shirt pockets, yo.) New connections are the way of the world. Buh-bye DVI. Barely had a chance to miss you, HDMI.
That is, *I* have to plan for obsolescence, whether or not my favorite vendors are. I figure any connector is good for 3 years, 5 tops. We’ve been living on borrowed time with DVI. And since I budget about 2 years for a computer, I figure it’ll all line up with my next purchase next year….and I’ll be ready to line it all up again in 5 years or so.
The cool part? “Honey, I HAVE TO HAVE THIS FOR MY JOB!!”
And since we make TV and movies for a living, time to pull the trigger on that Panasonic 103″ plasma. A steal at $70K. Or hold out a little longer for the Panasonic 150 incher, due next year for what they’re saying could be $100K-ish. They showed that at the CES Keynote in 2008. Dude, this thing can show an elephant at FULL SIZE.
HONEEEEEE, I NEED THIS FOR MY JOB!!!
Anyway, for $29.95 plus postage, Apple has your back on the DisplayPort problem.
Let me know if you need any help talking to your wife about the big TV.
Yr pal,

Tim,
I too have an HP DreamColor. The mini-DisplayPort on the Macbook is NOT the same thing as regular DisplayPort found on the HP. Apple created their own mini version of the connector, and an adapter cable will be required to plug a new Macbook into the HP’s DisplayPort. Sort of like when they had their own custom “mini-DVI” connector on the Powerbooks.

December 14, 2008 at 2:43 pmHi
Its all part of the “bag of hurt” that Steve Jobs promised – the ” too complex” licensing (including for the DRM for HD displays…)
DVI doesn’t pass muster… 🙁
