I am looking into getting a Mac Pro to use with FCS2. I will only be editing dv at first but want to get a mac pro that will easily be capable of editing compressed hd on future projects. Does this configuration sound good?

    # Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    # 8GB (4x2GB)
    # Mac Pro RAID Card
    # 500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
    # ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB
    # Dual Channel 4Gb Fibre Channel PCI Express Card

and possibly a 4TB drobo…any idea if the drobos are good?
I’d like a drive setup with some security rather than just raid0.
or should i just add 3 more internal drives?- is this something I can easily do myself at a later time?

I am not very tech savvy, but from my experience I was thinking that in order to edit hd later, i could then just get an AJA IOhd and a fibre channel raid…(i.e. G-speed or similar). Any thoughts?
    Thank you

    Sounds good so far…

But I do have one question. Why the Mac Pro RAID card?

f you want to edit with internal drives, you can stripe them the the disc utility and edit any way you want. You might have trouble with HD uncompressed but I haven’t seen any issues with it.

All of you other specs look great. The Drobo would be an excellent option for RAID backup and/or small edit jobs as long as they don’t use Uncompressed video.

Yes you’re right…I do know I could just do that with disk utility…guess i don’t understand what the raid card does exactly. Thanks for your advice.

way before the optic fiber channel and AJA i/o, an internal raid with or without a raid card can take you safely through many projects.

the raid card does make a difference, its a faster, more stable solution both in reading and writing. i would look into the cladigit card, which is less expensive than the apple one, and can do up to 16 TB (with three additional ports)

    as for other things,
IO HD is sweet, but pricy

if you plan on video work you will need monitoring for CC and maybe inputs and outputs that are not firwire, you can look into blackmagick’s decklink HD extreme its a good card, and does a lot for a fair price.

normal computer speakers are problematic for video work. basic studio monitors (speakers) should go for around 200-500$ you can look into m-audio’s studiophile series

eventually, a professional video monitor, SD or HD, is something you would want to look into as well

    goodluck
