July 15, 2009 at 9:26 pm in reply to: Apple ProRes 422 Render Times

    Thanks for answering, Shane.

Just to add to it… We have three machines, all Mac Pro systems and all of them see really long render times with ProRes422. Yeah, the Magic Bullet stuff does add alot of time BUT… the render times in DVCProHD are more than half the time of ProRes.

Just for fun… Take a timeline with ProRes footage in it, add some filters, render it. Take that same footage, recapture it as DVCProHD and do the same thing as above, then render it.

July 14, 2009 at 2:35 pm in reply to: how much memory can FinalCutStudio use ?

[Jan Joubert] “so… shouldn’t I be able to boost this up to over 2.5gb usage? or atleast a 2.5gb usage? “

No…. This is the program requirement as set by Apple. The program isn’t so difficult that it needs more and more RAM as you need it. It relies alot on the FX plugin architecture now and on third-party capture cards for realtime performance. This isn’t totally true but its a simple way of putting it. Most of the realtime performance issues that people see are entirely related to RAM configuration.

Your system has 6 gig of RAM. You should be seeing some realtime performance issues. Maybe you don’t realize it yet…

Apple specifies a proper RAM configuration for optimal performance but its not widely broadcasted to the users. Here is a Apple tech doc talking about this.

    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1957?viewlocale=en_US

The more memory you have in your system makes yours system able to do more things at one time. I have 8 gig of RAM in mine and its not uncommon for me to run Entourage, FCP, Safari, iTunes, Photoshop, Motion and whatever else at the same time. That’s what the RAM is for.

July 14, 2009 at 2:10 pm in reply to: Issues recording HDV on a Sony HVR-M25E

I understand your frustration… It seems there is some issues with the Sony HVR HDV decks and FCP at the moment. I’m not able to write to an HVR-M15U deck in DV in FCP 6.0.5 (or 6.0.3, 6.0.4).

The only solution I found was to use Adobe Premier Pro CS3. We have the Production bundle installed on all of our systems and Premier seems to work fine for just this sort of thing. I’m not well versed in Premier but I have become well-acquainted with it lately.

Let me ask you this…. Is the deck set in the NTSC mode or PAL mode (60i or 50i)? Have you tried to re-initialize your deck back to factory specs? Give that a shot.

July 13, 2009 at 8:02 pm in reply to: Final Cut 6 and vcr Sony HVR m15u

[Juan Manuel] “I believe it might be a problem with the Final Cut, When looking for audio / video settings, In a / v devices, And see the playback output, Is: (missing) Apple firewire ntsc (720×480), And Las Other options are: Digital cinema desktop and “none”.

There is any problem with saying “missing”?, Affects the output?

Is also set to mirror on desktop “

I, too, have seen and currently see this issue. I’ve had to output my DV sequences as DV streams and then import them into Adobe Premier Pro for output to DV tape. This works BUT it’s stupid that I have to do this.

    Walter is correct.

I’m not a user of the EX series, but we do use the XDCAM HD flavor and if I create several subclips within a clip, I can import those ONLY if I wish.

July 13, 2009 at 1:05 pm in reply to: Writing back to disk – Final Cut to PDW-F75

I’m sorry… but I don’t mean to sound short with you. BUT… These steps are elementary to video editing and it concerns me that you are asking such elementary questions?

If you capture and edit in a particular codec, its ALWAYS best to write back to disc or tape in the same manner. So, in your case. Your footage was captured in ProRes 422 via HD-SDI. Then, you should write back to disc using HD-SDI and “Print to Video”. There should be no settings to set, other than the “Print to Video” dialog box. Make sure that you have machine control and write back. That’s it.

That’s because you cannot export via the HD-SDI connection. You “Print to Video” to get it back to your disc.

    OR

You can export via the XDCAM Software Transfer program, but you’ll have to render all of your timeline into an XDCAM HD setting then back to disc. This will take some time to do. BTW, you have to use a firewire connection to do this, just like the import procedure.

How did you capture the footage used? Did it come from the disc or was it from some other source? What codec was it captured into? Was it the XDCAM HD settings?

    Wow…. This sure sounds like a bummer….

I have the same setup and everything works perfectly on mine. BUT we do have a 2007 Quad Core 3.0 system with 8 gigs of matched pairs of RAM, the this thing has an issue with RT Effects showing up as realtime. Everything else about the machine is fine, just issues with RT Effects.

July 2, 2009 at 10:16 pm in reply to: How much can I magnify the footage?

Guys…. Dude said that he is down-converting it to DVD. You can get away with a little more than 15% before its noticeable.

I did a video for a client that I had to blow up an HDV image about 200% shot with the Sony Z1U in its “progressive” mode, and the client loved it. Was it noticeable?… Yeah, but it was acceptable. Fox Sports accepted the show it went into.

Did I like doing that? NO. But sometimes you have to do things for clients that you don’t like doing. Its called “making the client happy”.

Its amazing how much you can getaway with when you down-convert to SD from HD.
