Apple ProRes 422 Render Times

Let me ask you something here.
Has anyone noticed that rendering in Apple ProRes422 1080i29.97 takes an absolute eternity as compared to other codecs? Such as a simple text graphic in DVCProHD 1080i29.97 – about 10 second duration – about 20 seconds render time. Same graphic dropped into a ProRes422 1080i29.97 timeline takes about 5 minutes to render.
That was just one example but this is very typical.
Right now, I’m rendering a segment about 20 seconds with Magic Bullet plugins and the estimator tells me about 25 minutes. In DVCProHD, it will take about 10 minutes.

July 15, 2009 at 9:09 pmWell, Magic bullet plugins are intesive, but no, those are inordinately long render times. I don’t have that issue. Takes 20 min to render about 10 min of stuff on my timeline…mainly text with drop shadow.

July 15, 2009 at 9:15 pmI’ve done most of my work in ProRes 422HQ and compared to smoke or fire(uncompressed HD in an antiquated hardware system I formerly used) the renders are much faster. They are dealing with a more complex codec than DVC Pro so the rendering is a bit longer but the finished quality is noticably better.

Just to add to it… We have three machines, all Mac Pro systems and all of them see really long render times with ProRes422. Yeah, the Magic Bullet stuff does add alot of time BUT… the render times in DVCProHD are more than half the time of ProRes.
Just for fun… Take a timeline with ProRes footage in it, add some filters, render it. Take that same footage, recapture it as DVCProHD and do the same thing as above, then render it.

but back in the mid 90’s it was amazing! heh heh.wayne its because ProRes is a variable bit rate codec.
do a render out of After effects uncompressed, then try prores, same thing..it takes longer.

July 15, 2009 at 11:44 pmProRes 422 1920×1080 timeline. 4:30:00 (4 min, 30sec). Simple text overlaid as subtitles, with drop shadow. Four lower thirds that consisted of two video elements, one as an alpha channel.
Render time: 7:31
DVCPRO HD 1080p 23.98. 4min, 33 seconds. I just pasted the same text and lower thirds onto it and rendered.
Render time: 1:17
DVCPRO HD won by a LOT. 7x faster. My guess…lower data rate. DV renders faster that DVCPRO HD. ProRes has a higher data rate than DVCPRO HD…and it is full raster not anamorphic.

Let me add to this…. Last night while pondering before bedtime, I started to think about the fact that the ProRes422 footage that we are using was HDV converted to ProRes and mixed with a little XDCAM HD. This works wonderfully but the render times are awful and I think I may know why.
XDCAM HD is 1440×1080. HDV is 1440×1080. HDV converted to ProRes422 is still 1440×1080. So I magine the render files are being rendered into the same which is not anyway close to the native size of ProRes422.
SO…. with that being said. Here’s my thoughts on HDV to ProRes422 capture. Its awesome until you edit, UNLESS you have lots to time for rendering. But I think what we will do from now on will be to capture using this method. Look through the footage delete the non-useable stuff and recapture into DVCProHD so that we can edit much faster.
The time saving feature of this HDV to ProRes422 is not very practical when used in the real world of episodic program editing.
Sometimes we get carried away with all of the new cool features and forget that sometimes the “powers that be” haven’t really measured its “real world” practicallity.

It IS? It shouldn’t be. ProRes is full raster. When we convert HDV (or DVCPro HD) to ProRes through the Kona 3 it goes full raster 1920×1080 as it should.

For the practical use of episodic television, documentaries, etc… HDV to ProRes works perfectly here going through the Kona. Prior to using ProRes we used to take it to DVCPro HD all the time. That worked perfectly as well. Editing in ProRes is just as fast as DVCPro HD, but of course the end product is cleaner since the graphics are cleaner in ProRes.
So HDV to ProRes is awesome right through the editing and mastering process here.

July 16, 2009 at 1:54 pmI’m sorry… I should have specified that we are converting thru firewire. It works much like DV capture and making clips on Start-Stop Detection. It makes for faster ingestion of tapes on a Mac Pro.

We’re running on two Mac Pros and a G5 Quad. Might make for faster ingest, but it’s obviously slowing you down on the edit. I would come in via the Kona and use ProRes correctly for the entire edit.
