how much memory can FinalCutStudio use ?
Posted by Andrex71 on September 8, 2005 at 4:55 pmhi
i’m a new Mac user ( powermac g5 dp 2.3 4Gb ram ),i’m italian so sorry for my english !
i have 2 questions :1 – is it true that Tiger ( or Mac in general ) gives ram/CPU resources only to the active program even if more programs are running at the same time ( is that one of the differences between Mac and PC that instead divides resources among all the running programs causing system crash ) ?
2 – is it true that FinalCutStudio can use maximum 4Gb of ram ( if so i’ll never upgrade to 8Gb ) ?
many thanks

September 8, 2005 at 5:26 pmMotion is the real memory hog — throw RAM at it if you have some spare Euros sitting around. However, tests have shown that 2.5gb of RAM is the golden spot for everything else (FCP) — meaning that there are some benefits to going above 2.5 to 4 or 6gb, but those benefits are relatively small and not worth the extra expense in most cases when looking from the standpoint of cost/benefit analysis.

September 8, 2005 at 7:53 pmThat’s easy…. if you want to crunch numbers, a PC will do. If you want to do video or digital photography, a Mac is best. So, PCs are perfect for math like Excel and complex games, but video has to be done on a Mac. PCs cannot compete with a Mac when it comes to video.

Rather a blanket statement, that’s really untrue. A lot of videographics programs run better on the PC. After Effects and 3D apps especially.Kevin Monahan

Rubbish!!! Wayne, there are many, many people working on PCs in this field. In fact, there are many more on PCs than on MACs. There are excellent tools on both platforms that are in many cases very much platform specific. If you walk into ILM, Blur Studios, Digital Domaine, or any other major players, you will find both MACs and PCs all over the place, with pros using the very best tools they have for each specific task they need to accomplish.

it’s funny, I consider After Effects to be *the* app that runs equaly great on mac than on pc. It’s amazingly stable and performance is globaly very similar.
Combustion, on the opposite, runs better on PC… and mac version 4 is lagging since like 8 months…

September 9, 2005 at 7:19 amI don’t know Bret, Wayne cuts fishing bait commercials for the largest company of its type in the world. After watching those wiggling baits full-time for forty hours each week, I’m guessing he has a few loose cogs tumbling around in his wheel house.

September 9, 2005 at 11:25 am1. No. Tiger ( or Mac in general ) gives ram/CPU resources to all active processes.
2. No. FCP can address only 2.5GB RAM … see https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93844
