Yes, Walter…. Its a Kona 3 using the 7.0 drivers. And just to let you know… AJA does not support the 1440 aspect ratio. I just spent the month with tech support pointing out this issue and they have decided that there is a software issue when using non-square pixel formats. AJA software engineering has confirmed this.

I would agree with Walter completely. We are an HDV & XDCAM shop and I have never many seen issues with XDCAM and Color.
HDV… This is a terrible creature that reared its ugly head at the request of Sony to get out another cheap codec. Working with this monster in FCP is never fun.
I do want to give you a word of warning about HDV-ProRes Capture. This is a great concept BUT when you do this, you video remains in the 1440×1080 aspect. It marries well with XDCAM HD 1440×1080 but not so well with other full res codecs. On top of that… your render times will be terrible.
I found it extremely ironic that Apple created a full res codec and then created a way to capture HDV into it but leaving the aspect alone. This creates a problem with ProRes because its aspect is wrong for the codec.

At the very least (this worked for us), get a hold of a copy of FCP Remover. Its free software and it will remove FCS completely (except the plugins). Then, uninstall any video hardware card software like an AJA or Blackmagic. Restart your computer, zap the PRAM, reset your permissions and then install FCS 3.

Scrubbing & trimming have never been an issue with us. It’s the unbelieveable render times after placing filters on your clips. Don’t get wrong. I’m well aware that filters add render times but when it noticably longer than under FCP 6, something’s not right. This is also the case with ProRes.
Yes, I have purged my prefs and reset my permissions.

Personally, I’ve noticed that FCP 7 was supposed to be faster and more efficient with regards to XDCAM and ProRes but in reality, it so much more slower than ever. It now takes hours, rather than minutes or seconds to work with either. FCS 3 has been the biggest diappointment that I have witnessed from Apple to date. WOW! My effeicency has gone into the toilet.

Well…. It looks like some of the issue is fixed! YEAH!!! Now, its up to AJA to fix the rest…
When working with XDCAM HD, everything is fine now. The problem still exists with DVCProHD, but its a smaller screen shift now.

I wonder if it fixed the screen shift that I get with ANY non-square pixel footage using the AJA Kona 3 card with the 7.0 drivers.
I have already contacted AJA about the issue and they have identified some programming issues and will fix by the end of the month according to the tech guy I spoke with.
But, I’m not entirely sure that its an AJA issue.

The problem you are seeing lies with how the video was recorded. When recording HDV on Sony Camcorders, the cameras default to AUTO in the timecode section. That means it will switch back and forth from NDF to DF between clips and n=most of the time clips are recorded at NDF.
You have to have the cameras set to DF or NDF if that’s what you need.
The only solution is to wade thru the errors until you have everything captured OR you will have to set your M15U deck to DF or NDF timecode also then dub you tapes to new tapes.

That’s funny… lots of people do this everyday with EX material.
Sound like this person you spoke with was not using a correct workflow for the EX. You use Log and Transfer to ingest the material and let FCp set your sequence to match your footage. Pretty easy. After that, you can set a preference to allow FCP to render in ProRes422 (for better render quality). HDV has to conform before output, the EX does not.

When working with XDCAM HD or IMX, having the Sony Transfer program is an absolute must with Final Cut Pro. That is if you want to work “natively”. If your looking to log and cature everything, you don’t need the Sony software.
