XDCam to Pro Res and “improvement”?

Are we talking XDCAM HD or XDCAM EX? If EX, It was make editing easier since it’s an intraframe format. Also, it will hold up better to color correction and compositing.

No, not if you are talking about a straight transcode from your XDCAM HD delivery master to a ProRes delivery master … the filesize will increase for sure but not the quality. But if you are going to export a new ProRes HQ version directly from the XDCAM HD native timeline then yes, there can be some benefit derived from rendering out to effects, treatments, graphics etc to the better target format.

All that aside tho’, if the station has specified ProRes HQ for delivery, well then thats what you need to give them.

they actually just said they would “prefer” the Pro Res version, but didn’t sound adamant. anyway, i’ll just send them what they’ve asked for until we decide on something different. thanks for your input.

That is until you reach that one engineer that is having a bad day and your file reaches him in XDCAM HD, then you get that phone call from the engineer saying you sent the wrong formated file but he will take time from his day to convert it to the proper format.

Yes…. I’ve run into this one before.

i planing to purchase a sony PMWEX1/EX3 HD camera for corporate films and documentary shoot. somebody in post production studio told me that HD camera capture in final cut pro causes very long time to capture and render files, even drag and droping files to timeline demands rendering. so they prefer not to shoot in HD format, and advised me for HDV camera instead of HD is it true. pls advise me. i am planing to buy a sony HD pmwex1 or ex3.

That’s funny… lots of people do this everyday with EX material.

Sound like this person you spoke with was not using a correct workflow for the EX. You use Log and Transfer to ingest the material and let FCp set your sequence to match your footage. Pretty easy. After that, you can set a preference to allow FCP to render in ProRes422 (for better render quality). HDV has to conform before output, the EX does not.
